This week Amsterdam’s first street art restaurant officially opens at the Utrechtsestraat/ Rembrandtplein: De Bajes. De Bajes means ‘the jail’ in Dutch. Rembrandtplein has been a big tourist spot for years, but locals were waiting for something new & original. Finally, here it is!
The name is perfect for jokes like, “See you in De Bajes/ Jail” and “We met in De Bajes/ Jail last night”. You’ll find “serious” street art at Utrechtsestraat 11 by some of the biggest names in the industry: The London Police, D*Face, Ben Eine and Laser 3.14.
Don’t worry, you won’t starve in this jail. Try the tasty All Day Breakfast, or order a healthy superfood salad. Crash on one of the comfortable couches with bar bites and cold cuts, or enjoy a long dinner in the beautiful dining area. The kitchen is run by chef Niels van Halen, who used to be the chef at Michelin star restaurant de Hoefslag.
If you want to go all out: order a big bottle of Dom Perignon and a giant plateau with oysters. Listen to the beats of some of the best DJs in the city. There is something for everyone at De Bajes! With a selection of 15 different types of gin, over 40 specialty beers and a top of the notch list of cocktails & spirits, I will happily “sit out my time” in this jail…
Opening hours De Bajes: weekdays open ’till 01:00, on the weekend open untill 03:00.
