Lt. Cornelis: Dutch Masters & Art on a Plate

Lt. Cornelis

There’s a special place hidden in the heart of Amsterdam, where you will find beautiful pieces of art… and I’m not just talking about the food. Restaurant Lt. Cornelis is located at the Voetboogstraat, close to the Spui. Images of famous paintings by Dutch masters decorate the walls and on the menu you find classic Dutch dishes with a refined, modern twist.

Restaurant Lt. Cornelis opened just over a year ago and is a true hidden gem. We start the evening with a good old G&T at the bar, served with a delicious appetizer. The shooter with cucumber, asparagus and cauliflower is light and fresh, served with a savory cheese butterfly with onion mayonaise and peas powder. The highlight of the appetizer is the seaweed mini pancake with foam of Gouda cheese and mustard seed! Yumm!

Seated at our table the party continues. Our starter is Ossenworst from Amsterdam, served with cauliflower, Amsterdam pickles and piccalilly ice cream. Yes, PICCALILLY ICE CREAM! Ooh la la!

The friendly sommelier helps us with our wine selection. My cheeks are getting warmer by the minute and when my glass is filled again, the next course arrives. The cod fish, served with Dutch shrimp, beetroot and beurre blanc is absolutely delicious. I wanted to lick every last bit of it off my plate.. I didn’t though… thank god.

The main course is a tender Dutch beef sirloin, served with a soft puree of potato, carrot, onion & leek. Dessert is a true piece of art, like the Dutch masters on the walls. The chocolate cake with walnuts, chocolate crumble, citrus foam, Dutch strawberries and butter ice cream is divine. This may sound like a whole meal, but the portion is excellent. It disappeared from my plate like magic…

Restaurant Lt. Cornelis is a great new addition to Amsterdam, located in the heart of the city. It is the perfect spot to end a long day of sightseeing in the city and enjoy a top of the notch Dutch dinner, surrounded by Dutch masters. Delicious wines, professional, kind staff and surprising cocktails! Highly recommended.
