Some people think, when they hear the word ‘hostel’, about 18 year old backpackers with dreads, that wear the same clothes every day of their trip. But that is not what a hostel in Australia is about..at least not all of them. Australia is set for backpacking, there is a hostel for everybody. It’s all about picking the right one, so you don’t wake up underneath a sweaty drunk Swedish guy like I did..unless you actually want to of course.
A lot of budget travellers choose to stay at a hostel, travellers of many different ages. Simply because you pay about half the price you would pay at the hotel next door.
My first night at a hostel was not exactly what I hoped for..(I won’t say where…G’day Sydney…oops I just did:-). After a 27 hour flight I was promised a quiet first night…The thing was..they forgot I was coming, so they put me in the only available bed, in a room with 5 Irish guys and a Swedish drunk, who decided it was the appropriate time to have sex with his drunk girlfriend, while I was just about to go to sleep in the bed above him..and after a few hours I woke up with him on top of me because he ‘wanted to say hi’ ….lovely. My friend who stayed at Eva’s before told me to go there, so I packed my bags as fast as I could.
What an oasis! I sleep in a room with 4 girls, whom I’m still friends with 4 years later! We have our own bathroom, the kitchen and breakfast area are cosy and there’ s an amazing rooftop area, with two barbeques. Travellers of all ages stay here. Eva’s also has private rooms, so you don’t have to share your room with anybody.
Eva’s Backpackers is located at Kings Kross. People told me this is one of the rougher areas of Sydney, but I didn’t notice that at all. The streets all look beautiful and there’s a great pizzeria around the corner: Doughboy. The best restaurant invention they have in Australia is Bring Your Own (drink). In Amsterdam there’s no such thing! There are many cute bars in the area, like the Worldbar, where they serve your cocktail in a thea pot and the classy Gazebo Winegarden.
Eva’s is the best hostel I stayed at, during my 4 month trip through Australia. It’s cosy & clean. Great place for every traveller, even though you’re not 18 anymore and those dreads have been combed out.
