Good to know before you book: public transport is completely free throughout the Grand Duchy. Free transport means a boutique hotel slightly outside the old town costs you nothing extra to get around, and the free tram runs all the way to Luxembourg Airport. For solo travellers the smaller hotels have another upside: friendly staff who remember you and a bar where sitting alone with a glass of wine feels completely normal.

Best boutique hotels Luxembourg City has to offer

These are the best boutique hotels Luxembourg City has to offer: historic, intimate and mostly in or within walking distance of the old town. Most have fewer than 40 rooms, so they book up quickly on summer weekends. Booking in advance pays off!

Mama Shelter Luxembourg in Kirchberg

Hotel Mama Shelter is the most fun place to stay in the city. Upon entering you will find a warm welcome on the mirror in the bathroom; at breakfast you can make fresh juice with a slow juicer and pick your favorite bread. There is even freshly baked brioche waiting for you. In addition, the hotel has a cinema, a boulangerie and a beautiful rooftop bar. Loved it! I would go back in a heartbeat. Technically it is a design hotel rather than a tiny boutique, but it has more personality than most places in town. The old town is a quick, free tram ride away.

Hotel Le Place d’Armes in Ville Haute

Hotel Le Place d’Armes, Relais & Châteaux sits right on the most beautiful square in the old town. Think exposed stone walls, real attention to detail and a restaurant that locals actually choose for special occasions. If you want to feel properly treated, this is the one. Behind the façade is an 18th century building where Art Nouveau, Baroque and contemporary design meet, with elegantly styled rooms and suites that each have their own look. Of all the luxury hotels in town, this one has the great location: you step straight out onto Place d’Armes. You can eat at the gourmet restaurant La Cristallerie, the brasserie Plëss or the more casual Café de Paris without leaving the building.

Villa Pétrusse above the Pétrusse valley

Villa Pétrusse is a pretty, smaller property in a quieter part of the city. Lovely interiors, a personal atmosphere and a garden that feels very un-city-like. If you want something low-key but well done, this is a solid choice. The whole place has a serene atmosphere, rare this close to the centre. This late 19th century villa on Avenue Marie-Thérèse has 22 rooms, grounds designed by landscape designer Edouard André and a view of the Pont Adolphe across the valley. The rooms have reproductions of watercolours by Luxembourg painter Sosthène Weis. Dinner? The gourmet restaurant Le Lys cooks Luxembourgish dishes with Asian influences.

La Pipistrelle Hotel in Grund

La Pipistrelle Hotel is the smallest boutique hotel on this list and the one on my wishlist for next time. Just 4 rooms and suites in a historical building on Montée du Grund, the steep street between the upper town and Grund. The Chemin de la Corniche and the Bock Casemates are a short walk away. Quiet, intimate and about as far from a hotel chain as you can get. Pack light: there is no lift and the rooms are spread over 4 floors. Expect to pay upwards of 250 euros a night.

Voya Residence Zenit Royal in Ville Haute

Voya Residence Zenit Royal is boutique in the most literal sense: just 6 apartments on Boulevard Royal in central Luxembourg. Each one has a full kitchen and its own furnished balcony with views over the city. Ideally located within walking distance of Place d’Armes and the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke. There is a concierge service and the front desk is staffed on weekdays; arriving later, you check in with a smart lock code. Not one I have tested yet. Parking is off site, at around 40 euros a day.

Hotel Simoncini in Ville Haute

Hotel Simoncini is the art lover’s choice. Contemporary art hangs throughout the building on Rue Notre-Dame and the hotel runs temporary exhibitions, a few minutes’ walk from Notre Dame Cathedral. It offers rooms in the old town without the Relais & Châteaux price tag. You are right in the middle of the city, so light sleepers can ask for a quiet room.

Maison Melu Gare on Avenue de la Gare

Maison Melu Gare is a recent addition on Avenue de la Gare and a cross between a hotel and an aparthotel. Part of the historic façade was restored; inside you find contemporary rooms of 22 to 25 m² by Amsterdam studio Concrete, each with a kitchen, a workspace and its own outdoor space. Guests benefit from a laundry room, a co-working space and Melu’s Kitchen, where breakfast is served. Not one I have tested yet. Rates start at roughly 160 euros a night. Travelling with a pet? This is not one of the pet friendly hotels: dogs and cats stay home.

The Central City in Gare

The Central City, Luxury Serviced Residence is a great option if you are staying a few nights and want more space. Well-equipped apartments in the center of the city, with the flexibility of self-catering. A smart pick for longer stays or if you are traveling as a small group. It is on Avenue de la Gare, halfway between the station and the old town, with easy access to both. Every apartment has a full kitchen.

Boutique hotels in Luxembourg City by area

Most boutique hotels in Luxembourg City are in Ville Haute, the old upper town, with a handful in Grund and on the edges of the centre. Thanks to the free trams and buses, the area matters more for atmosphere than for getting around.

Ville Haute is the old city and the historic center, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the easiest base for a first visit or a solo trip, with the Grand Ducal Palace, Place d’Armes and most museums within walking distance.

Grund is the lower town along the river Alzette, with Café des Artistes and the riverside walks on your doorstep.

Kirchberg has the newer design hotels, the MUDAM and the Philharmonie, one free tram ride from the old town.

Gare works best for train arrivals and longer stays.

Dommeldange, north of the centre, is the green option with its own train station.

How to choose between the boutique hotels in Luxembourg City

The right boutique hotel in Luxembourg City depends on what you want your evenings to look like. The best hotels in Luxembourg for one trip can be the wrong ones for the next, so this is how I would pick:

One thing to check before you book: is breakfast included? A good breakfast is not always part of the rate at Luxembourg hotels, and paying for it separately adds up quickly. Hotel Le Place d’Armes is the best boutique hotel in Luxembourg City for a splurge, Mama Shelter is the most fun and Hotel Simoncini gives you the old town for less. For a romantic stay, look at La Pipistrelle or Villa Pétrusse.

Best things to do in Luxembourg City near your hotel

Every hotel on this list is within walking or tram distance of the museums, attractions and best things to do in Luxembourg City. Here are 3 tours I would book, plus my favourite spots for the evening.

The Wenzel route is the walk to start with. In about 3 hours you go from the upper town to Grund and see vineyards, fortifications and the river Alzette. Want someone to tell you the stories behind the walls? Book the guided city walk with wine tastings.

Luxembourg City is hilly, and an e-bike is the smartest way to discover many attractions and cover more ground without arriving at every viewpoint completely out of breath. The guided e-bike tour covers the old town, the Alzette valley and the fortifications in 3 hours. Food lovers can taste their way through the city on the guided food tour with tastings.

In the evening, the terrace of De Gudde Wëllen has the best view over the city and is the perfect spot to end the day. Down in Grund, Café des Artistes is the place where you can sing along with a pianist. If you dare. For dinner, try the ceviche with pineapple and melon at Um Plateau; it is one of the better things I ate on this trip. Follow me on Instagram for more travel inspiration from Luxembourg and beyond.

Getting to and around Luxembourg City

Getting around Luxembourg City costs you nothing: buses, trams and second class trains are free throughout the country. The free tram connects Findel airport with Kirchberg, the city centre and the central station. Arriving late with luggage? A private airport transfer takes you straight to your hotel door.

My tip: Luxembourg City has a lot of height differences. To minimize the climbing up and down, you can take a free elevator to the higher part of the city at several places. Try the glass Pfaffenthal elevator and the centrally located Ascenseur Elevator Plateau St. Esprit Grund. Ideal!

Free wifi is standard at almost every hotel, but for the map and tram times on the go you want data.

Combining Luxembourg with a longer trip through Europe? Sort your travel insurance before you leave.
