Things to do Luxembourg City: tips and highlights

I recently visited Luxembourg City for the first time and I was so surprised by this green, historic city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only a five and a half hour train ride from Amsterdam, and public transport is completely free throughout Luxembourg! The city is full of great wine bars, fresh delicacy shops and concept stores. You can go on beautiful walks in and around the city. If you are looking for my full city guide, you are in the right place. Read on for the best things to do in Luxembourg City, where to stay and all my tips and highlights. And if you want more European city inspiration, check out my Lille city guide too!

Best things to do in Luxembourg City

1. Walk the Wenzel route

During this city walk you will see many highlights, such as the beautiful Le Chemin de la Corniche. From here you have a beautiful view over the city, and this place is also known as “the most beautiful balcony in Europe”. During this walk of about 3 hours, you go from the picturesque upper town to the charming district of Grund and will see vineyards, fortifications and the river Alzette. The bridge Pont du Stierchen is also worth seeking out. You feel like you have stepped into a scene from Beauty and the Beast, because of the beautiful houses, butterflies and wonderful nature. Luxembourg City has many differences in height, so it is important that you have good mobility for this walk because of the many stairs. Book the guided city walk with wine tastings if you want a local guide to show you the best spots along the way.

2. Explore Grund

The lower part of the city is called Grund. Grund is impressive to look at from above; from there you can clearly see how beautiful Neumünster Abbey is. You will find photogenic, winding streets and fun hangouts in Grund, such as Café des Artistes, where you can sing along with a pianist in the evening. If you dare.

3. Visit the Casemates du Bock

A mile-long, underground system of corridors built in the 17th century to defend the city. This is Luxembourg’s biggest tourist attraction. A visit takes about an hour or so. From the underground corridors, you have beautiful views over the city. With the Luxembourg Card, which you can buy for 1, 2 or 3 days, you get free admission to many museums including the Casemates du Bock and the MUDAM museum. Using this card will always save you money compared to paying separate entrance fees everywhere.

Staying connected in Luxembourg is easy. I always use Saily when I travel; download an eSIM in minutes and stay connected as soon as you land. No roaming fees, no SIM card stress. Click here to get your eSIM.

4. Book a guided food tour

One of the best ways to discover Luxembourg City is through its food scene. The guided food tour with tastings takes you through the best local spots in the city; you will try Luxembourgish specialties, hear the stories behind the dishes and get insider recommendations you would never find yourself. These tours run in small groups and sell out quickly, so book ahead.

5. Explore by e-bike

Luxembourg City is hilly, and an e-bike is genuinely the smartest way to cover more ground without arriving at every viewpoint completely out of breath. The guided e-bike tour covers the best of the city in 3 hours; a knowledgeable guide takes you to the highlights of the old town, the Alzette valley and the fortifications. A good option if you are short on time or want to cover more ground than the Wenzel route allows.

6. Grab a coffee and hit the skatepark

Grab a coffee to go at Do for Love and check out Skatepark Péitruss, tucked under the stately arches of the Passerelle Bridge. The skate park includes an outdoor fitness area. I was quite impressed by all the testosterone eye candy that raced by on skates and skateboards. Bonjour!

7. Have a drink at De Gudde Wëllen

The terrace of De Gudde Wëllen is not to be missed! From here you have the best view over the city. Order a G&T, or two, and you are guaranteed to linger for a loooong time. A hidden, beautiful courtyard garden can also be found at Bosso restaurant!

8. Discover the best wine bars

After boosting your daily steps considerably, give your leg muscles some well-deserved rest at one of the city’s wine bars. Recommendations are Vins Fins, Pas Sage and Flûte Alors! Do yourself a favor and order a cheese board to accompany your wine. You can thank me later.

9. Have lunch at these local favorites

Great spots for lunch are Cocottes Chimay, Konrad Cafe & Bar, Kaale Kaffi, Beim Renert and La Mezzanine du Boulevard. Konrad Cafe and Kaale Kaffi (pictured below) both have unique, colorful, vintage interiors your grandmother would be in love with.

10. Shop and dine in the evening

Stock up at fantastic delicatessens, such as L’Epicerie Sàrl and LADUREE. When traveling by train, you do not have to worry about the weight of your suitcase, which is very convenient. For the most delicious cocktails, try cozy Bazaar Bar et Restaurant and Tube! And for a proper dinner, do not skip Um Plateau: creative dishes and dangerously good cocktails. The restaurants El Barrio (Spanish), Les Copains d’Abord and Piri Piri (Portuguese) are also well worth your time. Try the ceviche with pineapple and melon at Um Plateau, it is genuinely one of the better things I ate on this trip.

My favorite shops are La Manufacture Bohème, Muse by…, Butlers and Shop Esoteric Scarabaeus. Enter at your own risk.

My tip: Luxembourg City has a lot of height differences. To minimize the climbing up and down, you can take a free elevator to the higher part of the city at several places. Try the glass Pfaffenthal elevator and the centrally located Ascenseur Elevator Plateau St. Esprit Grund. Ideal!

Two full days in Luxembourg City are enough to see all the highlights. Be sure to add a trip to the nearby Mullerthal Trail. Here you can go on beautiful hikes; this is an ideal day trip from Luxembourg City at just a 30-minute drive. You will need a rental car for this. Best hotels in Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City has a solid mix of boutique stays and well-located hotels. These are my top picks across different styles and budgets. Note that prices in Luxembourg are generally higher than in other European cities, so booking in advance pays off.

Hotel Mama Shelter is the most fun place to stay in the city. Upon entering you will find a warm welcome on the mirror in the bathroom; at breakfast you can make fresh juice with a slow juicer and pick your favorite bread. There is even freshly baked brioche waiting for you. In addition, the hotel has a cinema, a boulangerie and a beautiful rooftop bar. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Hotel Le Place d’Armes, Relais & Châteaux sits right on the most beautiful square in the old town. Think exposed stone walls, serious attention to detail and a restaurant that locals actually choose for special occasions. If you want to feel properly treated, this is the one.

The Central City, Luxury Serviced Residence is a great option if you are staying a few nights and want more space. Well-equipped apartments in the center of the city, with the flexibility of self-catering. A smart pick for longer stays or if you are traveling as a small group.

More excellent hotels in Luxembourg City

Villa Pétrusse is a beautiful, smaller property in a quieter part of the city. Lovely interiors, a personal atmosphere and a garden that feels very un-city-like. If you want something low-key but well done, this is a solid choice.

Mercure Luxembourg Off Kirchberg is a reliable mid-range option with good transport connections to the center. Comfortable, consistent and one of the better-value options in a city where hotel prices can be steep.

Meliá Luxembourg offers a modern, polished stay with panoramic city views. Well-located and popular with business travelers, but the rooms are spacious enough to enjoy as a leisure guest too. The breakfast is particularly good.
