Where to Stay in Holbox: Best Hotels & Areas

Where to stay in Holbox? Somewhere you can walk barefoot to the beach, if you ask me. I spent a week on this car-free island after my weird days in Tulum. What a difference: white sand, friendly people, huge palm trees, great food, street art and salsa in the streets at night. I felt very safe here and loved this little paradise island! I ended my trip at Hotel Para Ti and enjoyed every single day. For my favourite restaurants, beach clubs and bars, read my Isla Holbox tips.

My advice: stay in the village or on the beach strip just east of it. Everything is walkable from there: Painapol for brunch, Roots for pizza, Zomay for sunset. Traveling solo? Stay central: that’s where you meet people. Below you’ll find 13 places to stay for every budget, social backpacker hostels and barefoot eco-resorts included, sorted by area and price. With real prices, so you know what to expect. Treat yourself!

Where to stay in Holbox: the best areas

Holbox Island, off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, is 42 kilometers (26 miles) long and barely 2 kilometers wide. Most of it is mangrove and lagoon. What you’ll actually use is the village and the long beach on the north coast. Almost every hotel sits in one of these 3 areas.

The village centre. Holbox town is built around the main plaza and the big Holbox letters. This is the busiest part of the island: restaurants, shops, bars, the church and the Hot Corner are all within 5 minutes on foot. Hotels here are rarely on the beach, but the sand and crystal clear waters are never more than 2 or 3 blocks away. In the evening, food carts on the square sell marquesitas: crispy rolled crêpes with cheese and Nutella. Tacos? Viva Zapata. More of my best restaurants are in my Isla Holbox travel guide. On a first trip to Holbox I recommend staying close to the centre, certainly as a solo traveler. Light sleepers, take note: the music is way too loud almost everywhere on the island. The centre is where it is loudest.

Playa Holbox and Paseo Kuka. The beach strip east of the village, with Paseo Kuka as the beach road behind it. Most boutique hotels are here. Holbox beach is at its best on this stretch: white sand, shallow water and easy access to the village on foot. Casa las Tortugas and Mawimbi are a 5 minute walk from the square. The further east you go, towards Punta Mosquito, the fewer tourists you’ll see. The beach also gets wider there, right up to the Yum Balam nature reserve. Past the hotel zone, a bike or golf cart makes life a lot easier.

West towards Punta Cocos. Sunsets, bioluminescence and very few people. This is the side for a secluded stay. Also: dirt roads that turn into rivers after rain. During my stay, Punta Cocos was very difficult to reach after a downpour, so think twice about staying out here in the rainy season.

Pro tip: take a golf cart taxi from the ferry to your hotel. It costs 60 to 100 pesos and saves you a swim.

Best Holbox luxury hotels

Luxury on Holbox means barefoot luxury. No marble lobbies, lots of palapa roofs. Think eco-bohemian, not Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres. In high season you pay $200 to $350 per night.

Casa las Tortugas is the hotel everyone photographs on Holbox. It sits right on the beach, 5 minutes from the main square, with a spa, a pool, its own kite school and 4 restaurants. Mandarina, one of them, has the best iced coffee on the island. It will cost you 6 euros, but if you want to treat yourself, it is so worth it. To be honest: if I could afford it, I would have stayed here too. It feels like the perfect hotel. What an amazing place. Rates start around $320 per night.

Ser CasaSandra was created by Cuban artist Sandra Pérez Lozano. You can tell: her art hangs everywhere. The hotel has 15 rooms on Paseo Kuka, a spa, yoga on the beach and the Mojito Beach Club out front. Sustainability is part of the concept here, not a sticker on the door. Expect around $330 per night.

A quieter luxury stay

Villas Caracol is for when you want the beach and nothing else. You’ll find it on Playa Norte, a 20 minute walk east of the village and close to Punta Mosquito. There are 16 suites, a pool, Balinese beds on its own stretch of beach and kayaks for guests. Breakfast is cooked to order and the beachfront restaurant Las Hamacas is worth the walk, even if you sleep elsewhere. Want to eat in town every night? Rent a bike. Prices sit between $200 and $300 per night.

Hotel Villas Flamingos sits at the far eastern end of the beach, where the Yum Balam nature reserve begins. Many guides call it the best luxury hotel on the island. It is also the playful one: bright rooms and hammocks strung in the shallow water out front. Some suites have their own hot tub. The village is a golf cart ride away, so this is a stay for slowing down. Expect around $350 to $400 per night in high season.

Isla Holbox boutique hotels

This is where Holbox does best. Mostly hotels with a handful of rooms. Breakfast comes with your feet almost in the sand. Most cost between $150 and $280 per night.

Adults only boutique hotels on Holbox

Hotel Para Ti: my home away from home! This small, adults only hotel is so incredibly colorful and cozy. Street art, bamboo, a shell as a shower, a nice bed and a lovely pool. I ended my trip here and enjoyed every single day. It is in the village, a 4 minute walk from Playa Holbox. Rooms cost around $150 to $200 per night. Casa Cat Ba is a beach house turned hotel. A French couple, Colette and Pierre-Marie, renovated an old seafront home into a few rooms in wabi-sabi style: wooden beams, sand-colored concrete, vintage furniture and an ocean view from every room. The Palapa Suite takes up the entire top floor. It is adults only and a 10 minute walk from the main square. Guests rate the breakfast 10 out of 10. Rooms start around $220 per night.

El Corazón Boutique Hotel is the eco option. And they mean it. Bamboo mattresses, solar panels, organic toiletries from the region and a zero plastic policy. You sleep in 1 of 11 rooms under natural palapa roofs, one block from the beach on Paseo Kuka. Adults only, breakfast cooked to order and a beach club pass included in your stay. PiedraSanta, on the corner of Jurel, serves contemporary Mexican food. Expect $200 to $280 per night.

Prefer something architectural? Punta Caliza is built with Mayan techniques: red cedar, lime stucco and a pool hidden in an inner courtyard. Adults oriented, with just 12 rooms.

Beachfront boutique hotels on Holbox

Mawimbi Boutique Hotel sits on the same stretch of beach as Casa las Tortugas, for a lot less money. It has 14 rooms in a tropical garden, with the Ocean Front Suites only 30 meters from the water. Breakfast is served on the sand and the beach restaurant Barquito mixes Mexican and Italian. Reviews keep praising the great service and food. There is no pool. With the sea this close, you won’t miss it. Count on $200 to $250 per night.

AWA Holbox Hotel Boutique: this stunning beachfront hotel has the most beautiful pool on the island. It lies west of the village, on the way to Punta Cocos: the sunset side of the island. With 33 rooms, 2 pools and a rooftop terrace it is the biggest hotel in this section. Prices run from about $175 to $250 per night.

Best hotels in Isla Holbox for every budget

Cheap hotels are hard to find on Holbox. A simple double room easily costs $150 in high season. Value for money matters here, so these hotels give you the most island for it.

Mid-range places to stay

Tierra del Mar Hotel is tiny, adults only and the location is hard to beat: 3 minutes from the main square, 2 minutes from the beach. The rooms, all with air conditioning, sit around a quiet courtyard with a pool. One guest is on their 7th stay. Not a bad quality mark. Prices are around $140 to $185 per night; breakfast costs extra.

Casa Hridaya Hotel Boutique is made for slow mornings. It is on Paseo Kuka, 50 meters from Playa Holbox and far enough from the music to sleep well. Climb the tower for sunrise, join the yoga on the roof, cool off in the pool. Guests warn that the wifi is terrible. Cut off from the outside world? On Holbox, I call that a feature. Rooms start around $150 per night.

Budget places to stay on Holbox

Boutique Hotel EL NIDO Holbox gets you a pool and adults only calm for a lot less. It is on the Punta Cocos side, with a garden, spa treatments and its own restaurant. The main beach is a 12 minute walk; the bioluminescence beach only 6. Don’t expect polished 4 star service. Expect a cute, peaceful hideaway. In low season rooms often go for under $100 per night.

Tribu Hostel: a great option for budget travelers, offering colorful and social accommodations just 50 meters from the beach, with rooms around $50 USD per night. The bar upstairs is beautiful and the cocktails are dangerously good, but things get a little less wild than at Che. Ideal for solo travelers. Che Hostel is a party hostel; I would prefer Tribu.

Pizza at Roots and the bar at Tribu Hostel

Barco Verde Hostel is the calm alternative to the party hostels. It sits on Avenida Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, one block from the beach and 3 minutes from the main square. Dorms and private rooms, breakfast included, a shared kitchen and hammocks to do nothing in. Movie nights and sunset outings help you meet people. The wifi runs on Starlink, which on Holbox is close to a miracle. Private rooms start around $80 per night.

Other cheap hotels worth a look: Casa Astral, a 4 star hotel with a rooftop pool for a fraction of the 5 star prices nearby. Villas Tiburon is adults only. Want to party? Then Che Holbox Hostel is your place.

Best things to do on Holbox

You don’t come to Holbox for a packed schedule. Still, these 6 things are worth planning your days around.

Swim with whale sharks. Between mid-May and mid-September, boats take you out to swim with whale sharks off the coast. Peak season trips sell out, so book before you arrive.

Walk to Punta Mosquito. At low tide you can walk the sandbanks for miles through clear, shallow water. From April to October you might spot wild flamingos along the way.

Take a boat tour. Book a multi island tour: it usually stops at the Yalahau Cenote, Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros, home to more than 30 bird species. Prefer to paddle? Kayak through the mangroves for crocodiles and birds up close.

Tour huts on the beach, MexicoBook your tours at one of these beach huts or in the town center. Prices should be almost the same everywhere.

See the water glow. On a new moon night between May and September, head to Punta Cocos for bioluminescence. Go with a guide if the roads are wet.

Cycle east. Rent a bike and ride out of the village. There are a few nice beach bars and you can book a massage: about 500 pesos for 60 minutes.

Walk a dog. Volunteers can walk the dogs of the Refugio Holbox Animal Sanctuary in the morning and early evening. Because of them, you won’t see street dogs on the island.

Before you go

Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. Single-use plastics are banned, so bring a reusable bottle and reef-safe sunscreen. Mosquitoes are huge fans of the island too. The sun is fierce, so pack aloe vera as well. Pack strong DEET, because dengue fever also occurs in Mexico. Bring enough pesos; plenty of places on the island prefer cash.

Staying connected in Mexico is easy. I use Saily when I travel; it lets me download an eSIM in minutes and stay connected as soon as I land. No roaming fees, no SIM card stress. And with golf carts, bikes and boat trips on the menu, arrange flexible travel insurance at home.

Where to stay in Holbox: Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Holbox?

The village centre or the beach strip just east of it, along Playa Holbox and Paseo Kuka. From there you can walk to restaurants, bars and the beach. Pick the Punta Cocos side only if you want quiet sunsets and don’t mind sandy roads that flood after rain.

How many nights should you stay on Holbox?

3 to 4 nights is enough for the beach, a boat tour and a few sunsets. I stayed a week. Coming for the whale sharks? Add an extra night, in case bad weather keeps the boats in the harbor.

MY FULL HOLBOX ISLAND GUIDE

How do you get from Cancun to Holbox?

Take a bus or shuttle from Cancun to Chiquilá, then the ferry to the island. The ADO bus takes about 2 hours; the ferry leaves every half hour, takes around 20 minutes and costs around 330 pesos one way. ADO also runs from Playa del Carmen. Most international flights land in Cancun, often with a connection in Mexico City. The easiest option is a shared shuttle directly from the airport.

Is Holbox a good place to stay as a solo traveler?

Yes, but expect mostly couples. I felt very safe walking around, but I did sometimes miss other solo travelers. Stay at a social hostel like Tribu Hostel or in the village centre to meet people more easily.

When is the best time to visit Holbox?

Late November to February is the sweet spot: the best weather, the clearest water and temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius. From March to May it gets hotter and more humid, up to 34 degrees. Peak season runs from December to April, with a second peak from June to September for the whale sharks. The rainy season runs from mid-May to November: the unpaved roads flood and seaweed can wash ashore. The first days of my trip the beach was pearly white; the last days I was swimming in seaweed. Want to swim with whale sharks? Go between mid-May and mid-September and accept some rain.
