Surfing in the Algarve: The Best Waves of South Portugal
Surfing in the Algarve is an absolute must if you’re chasing endless waves, golden beaches, and stunning cliffs. Some even say the Algarve has the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and we’re not here to argue. Think crystal-clear waters, dramatic rock formations, peaceful bays, and the kind of surf conditions that’ll have you grinning ear to ear.
Whether you’re popping up on your first wave or hunting for the perfect barrel, South Portugal has it all. Bonus points: it’s packed with incredible surf & yoga retreats. The balance you find on the yoga mat flows right into the ocean. I am a big fan of this combo and loved my previous surf trip to Ericeira. Surfing, like yoga, challenges you both physically and mentally. These are all my favorite surf spots, boutique hotels and other recommendations for surfing in the Algarve!

Tips for Solo Travelers
If you’re traveling solo, kick off your journey with a surf & yoga retreat. It’s a guaranteed way to meet fellow wanderers who often end up traveling together after the retreat ends.
Surfing is a (very bumpy) journey
Here’s the thing about surfing: you never really stop learning. I’ve heard it a thousand times: “Learning to surf is not linear.” One day you feel like you’re conquering the ocean; the next you’re swallowing half of it. It’s all part of the ride. After a day full of downward dogs and nose dives, you’ll have earned yourself a sizzling pot of Portuguese bulhao clams… and enough garlic breath to clear the beach.

Why Surfing in South Portugal Is So Special
Surfing in South Portugal is an experience in itself. The water can be brisk, but the conditions are dreamy: consistent swells, laid-back vibes, and beaches that make you want to extend your stay indefinitely. Located at the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, the Algarve has two coastlines, the western and southern coasts, which means there are waves somewhere no matter the season. Atmospheric fishing villages, lively towns, and good restaurants are never far away either.
Conditions suit all levels, with smaller and more manageable swells in summer that are perfect for beginners. The region has a thriving surf culture, with plenty of surf schools and camps for those looking to learn or level up. What makes it special is the communal atmosphere: after a day in the water, surfers tend to linger over long dinners and cold drinks, swapping stories about the waves. The dramatic cliffs and golden beaches make every session feel like it belongs on a postcard.

Lagos: Surf, Street Art & Soul Food
Lagos is hands down one of the best towns to start your surfing adventure in South Portugal. Think charming cobblestone streets, colorful murals around every corner, and some of the tastiest Portuguese restaurants you’ll find.
My favorite boutique hotels in Lagos
– Click on the names for rooms and rates –
Água Hotels Lagos Bay is a solid pick if you want a pool, sea views, and a comfortable base without fuss. Casa Margô is a small, characterful guesthouse with serious personality; think tiled floors, a relaxed courtyard, and breakfast that makes you get out of bed. For something more polished, Lagos Avenida Hotel sits right in the heart of town, close to the beach and all the good restaurants. All three book out quickly in summer, so don’t wait too long.
Soul & Surf: The Ultimate Surf & Yoga Retreat
Just outside Lagos lies Soul & Surf, a retreat that blends surf lessons, yoga sessions, and mouthwatering food into one delicious package. You can book stays of three, five, or seven days. The Algarve is home to over 60 surf camps, offering a wide variety of options for surfers of all levels. Many surf camps in the region provide convenient packages that include accommodation, surf lessons, and equipment rental. Whether you prefer a quiet hostel for early mornings or a lively social hub to connect with fellow surfers after your sessions, there’s a surf camp in the Algarve to suit every style.
At Soul & Surf Your day starts early with a breakfast spread featuring fresh banana bread. Bleary-eyed but excited, you’ll wiggle into your wetsuit and head to the beach. One pop-up on your board and you’ll forget all about that first chilly splash.
After your morning in the waves, a healthy lunch awaits under the fairy lights of the garden, complete with long communal tables and a dreamy swimming pool. Afternoon yoga sessions take place in a serene shala tucked among orange trees, and evenings are for decadent dinners and glasses of local wine. Stay in a shared room, a private suite, or a cozy glamping tent. Either way, good vibes are guaranteed.
Tip: Rent a car!
The coastline around Lagos is packed with hidden coves and charming villages; having a car makes exploring a breeze.

Lagos Tips: Best Restaurants, Coffee Spots & Beaches
Lagos is a foodie’s paradise. Some favorites:
- A Forja, Eattico, and Atasca-te-Tasca for unforgettable lunches.
- Coffee & Waves, Abigail’s Café, and Indigo Bar for your daily caffeine fix.
- Padaria Central for the ultimate Pastel de Nata.
If you’re up for a scenic hike, start in central Lagos and walk to Ponta da Piedade for one of the most stunning viewpoints in Portugal. Pack your camera; you’ll need it. Rather hit the beach? Don’t miss Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, and the legendary Lagos Grottos.

What to Do When Not Surfing in the Algarve
When you’re not in the water, the Algarve keeps you busy. Wander through whitewashed villages like Silves or Tavira, where Moorish castles and local markets are worth an afternoon. A rental car makes exploring these spots a lot easier as most villages aren’t well connected by public transport. Hike the dramatic cliffs of the Rota Vicentina or the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail for some of the best coastal views in Portugal.
Foodies will be very happy here. Fresh seafood at a local tasca, good wine on a sun-drenched terrace, and the ongoing quest for the best pastel de nata in town. The farmers’ markets are great for local cheeses, olives, and handmade ceramics if you want to bring something home.
For a bit of culture, the historic town of Lagos has ancient city walls and a surprisingly good street art scene. Feeling adventurous? Book a boat trip to explore the sea caves, or go paddleboarding through the lagoons. There’s always something to do on land when the waves aren’t cooperating.
Day Trip Tip: Burgau
Plan a lazy afternoon in Burgau, a picturesque fishing village with a gorgeous beach and the cozy restaurant Miam. Feast on oysters, local cheeses, and Portuguese wines; and don’t forget to make a reservation!
Praia Dona Ana
Sagres: Rugged Coastlines & Surfer’s Paradise
Sagres is Lagos’ wilder, untamed cousin and is often called the surf capital of the Algarve, thanks to its prime location near the west coast and some of the top Algarve surf spots. This small village has only one main street, a handful of cozy restaurants, and a whole lot of raw beauty. The surrounding beaches are absolute surf heaven, with the west coast receiving powerful, direct Atlantic swells that make it highly reliable for surfing.
Staying connected in Portugal is easy. I always travel with Saily, which lets you download an eSIM in minutes and stay connected as soon as you land. No roaming fees, no SIM card stress.

Sign up for surf lessons and surf-skating sessions, and don’t miss the homemade chia pudding at breakfast. The decor is homely, thoughtful, and everything you need after a day chasing waves.

The beach features both beach break and point break characteristics, offering multiple peaks that cater to intermediate and advanced surfers. The best waves form during mid to high tide, making timing crucial for optimal conditions.
- Praia do Tonel: a more rugged spot, perfect for advanced surfers.
- Praia da Mareta: a chilled-out beach for relaxed surfing sessions.
- Praia do Telheiro: a hidden gem for true adventurers (the climb down is worth it!).

Travel insurance for a surf trip: why SafetyWing is worth it
A surf trip sounds dreamy until you roll your ankle on a reef or wipe out harder than planned. Travel insurance is not the most exciting thing to arrange, but for a surf trip it is genuinely one of the smarter decisions you can make. SafetyWing covers medical costs, emergency evacuation, and trip interruption at a price that won’t make you cry. It works on a flexible monthly subscription, so you’re not locked into anything, and it’s accepted in most countries. I use it on every trip. For a surf holiday specifically, where the risk of a minor injury is very real, it’s one of those things you’ll be very glad you sorted before you left.

Tip: Visit Cape St. Vincent
Don’t leave without visiting Cape St. Vincent, Europe’s most southwestern point. Snap a photo at the legendary “Letzte Bratwurst vor Amerika” food truck… and maybe try the famous bratwurst!

Extra Surf Spots in the Algarve
If you’re ready to explore more waves, venture a bit north and check out:
Praia do Castelejo: A west-facing beach with rugged cliffs, sand dunes, and reliable surf. The natural shelter keeps the conditions surprisingly good, and the consistent Atlantic swells make it a favorite for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Praia do Cordoama: Located within the Costa Vicentina National Park, Cordoama is the kind of beach that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Powerful beach breaks, dramatic cliffs, and rolling dunes attract intermediate and advanced surfers who prefer their waves without a crowd. Multiple peaks and year-round swell make it a genuinely great surf spot, and the national park setting keeps it feeling remote and unspoiled.
Praia do Amado: One of the most consistent surf spots in the Algarve, with beach breaks for every level. Two point breaks, one fast and shallow, the other more forgiving, keep beginners and experienced surfers equally happy. There are surf schools on the beach, and the lively beach bar is exactly where you want to be after a session. Peak season runs from May to October, but surfable waves are there year-round.
Praia do Telheiro | Surfing in the Algarve | Sagres
Praia da Arrifana: Set against dramatic cliffs inside a national park, Arrifana is one of the best spots to learn to surf in the Algarve. Smaller conditions are forgiving for beginners, while bigger swells bring serious wave breaks for more experienced surfers. The local surf culture is real, several good instructors are based here, and the views make it hard to leave.
Meia Praia: One of the longest beaches in the Algarve, with consistent Atlantic swells and a laid-back atmosphere. The sandy bottom and forgiving waves make it ideal for beginners and intermediates, and longboarders love it here too. Reliable conditions in every season, never overwhelming.
Praia da Rocha: Praia da Rocha in Portimão is better known for its atmosphere than its surf, but autumn and winter bring solid waves worth checking out. Always look up the local surf report before heading out, as conditions vary a lot by season.
Praia da Luz: A scenic beach with a good mix of wave types, popular with both surfers and beachgoers. Reef breaks and seasonal swell variations mean conditions change throughout the year, so it rewards a bit of planning.

More excellent surf spots in the Algave
Praia da Bordeira: Big sand dunes, consistent waves, and good conditions for all levels. Swell size affects how clean the waves get, but Bordeira delivers more often than not. The natural setting is hard to beat.
Ponta Ruiva: Accessible only via a rough dirt track, Ponta Ruiva is not for the faint-hearted. A sturdy hire car and a taste for adventure are both required. Powerful waves and serious remoteness make it a spot for experienced surfers only.
Zavial: Known for a powerful right-hand point break and fast waves during big westerly swells. A favorite among the better surfers in the region, with world-class conditions when it’s on. Thrilling when it fires.<
Tonel: A classic Sagres surf spot that can close out during big south swells. Conditions change quickly here, so timing and experience matter. When you catch it right, it’s one of the best spots around. I had a bit of a rough time here!
Beliche: Hollow waves during big swells, best surfed at high tide. The wave breaks are unique and the cliff scenery is dramatic. A must-visit for advanced surfers who know what they’re doing.
Falésia: Gentle summer waves, great light, and a relaxed pace. Perfect for beginners and anyone who wants to ease into surfing without the pressure of serious swell. A lovely spot for a first lesson or a quiet afternoon in the water.
