Things to Do in Sharm el Sheikh: Tips, Hotels and Activities

Recently, I was in Egypt for the very first time! We all know the pictures of the ancient pyramids, but we visited the coastal town of Sharm el Sheikh and the impressive nature in the region. I have been to the desert a couple of times now. The Wadi Rum desert in Jordan impressed me a lot, my road trip in Oman was magical and I slept in the open air of Australia’s rugged outback for 10 nights, but the area of Sharm el Sheikh, located on the Sinai Peninsula, is completely different and absolutely beautiful. It is a great winter destination with temperatures around 24 degrees in December! I spent a week in this region and was blown away by the underwater world. What are the best things to do in Sharm el Sheikh? Read on for all my tips for visiting Sharm el Sheikh!

Introduction to Sharm el Sheikh

Sharm el Sheikh will blow your mind with its sheer beauty, nestled on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula where desert meets sea in spectacular fashion. If you are after adventure, relaxation and breathtaking natural scenery, Sharm el Sheikh is a must. The city is renowned for its crystal clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

But the real magic happens beyond the shoreline. The golden dunes of the Sinai desert beg to be explored: picture a sunset camel ride or stargazing under a vast desert night sky. Whether luxury resorts, the thrill of diving or the unique landscapes of Egypt draw you in, Sharm el Sheikh is a convenient option that caters to every type of traveler.

12 best things to do in Sharm el Sheikh

1. Explore the underwater world of Ras Mohammed National Park

This famous park, about an hour’s drive from Sharm el Sheikh, has been voted the most beautiful diving spot in the world several times. For snorkelers and scuba diving enthusiasts alike, there is a lot of beauty here. This is, after the Great Barrier Reef, the most beautiful place I have ever snorkeled. The colors and diversity of marine life are extraordinary. You can also book a boat trip from Naama Bay to combine snorkeling with a visit to White Island. It can be very crowded at the hotspots, so be prepared for that. Make sure you never touch the coral and use eco-friendly sunscreen.

2. Desert excursion and dinner with the Bedouins

A jeep tour through the Sinai Desert is an awesome experience. While Arabic music blasts through the speakers, you hold on firmly to the handles in the back of the jeep. The terrain causes hilarious scenes in the back seat. After a special sunset, you arrive at an atmospheric Bedouin camp with traditional dancing and delicious, fresh food. This desert safari is one of the most popular water activities in Sharm el Sheikh.

3. Stargazing in the desert

In the middle of the desert stand large telescopes. Never before have I seen Saturn, Mars and the moon in such detail with my own eyes. So impressive, it made me a little emotional. An unforgettable experience. Soho Square nearby also offers great evening entertainment if you want to watch a show after your desert adventure.

4. Visit the hippie village of Dahab

Visit Dahab and try the local cuisine at one of the cozy waterfront restaurants. There is a lot of kite surfing in laid-back Dahab. We had a delicious lunch at Ali Baba. Right next door is Tim’s Munch, an excellent brunch spot. Dahab is also known for the famous diving and snorkeling spot the Blue Hole. The old town area of Dahab has a great relaxed atmosphere that is very different from the resort strip of Sharm el Sheikh.

In the middle of the Sinai Desert stands the oldest and most important monastery in the world: Saint Catherine’s Monastery, founded in the 6th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located at the foot of Mount Moses, where according to the Bible Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. Here you will also find the burning bush. The monastery is still in use and inhabited by Greek monks. Apart from the Vatican, it holds the most valuable collection of writings in the world. You can also climb Mount Sinai for a beautiful sunrise hike to the top of the holy mountain. Many visitors climb Mount Sinai to watch the breathtaking sunrise or sunset views from the summit.

Hike through the beautiful gorges in the area, like the extremely photogenic Colored Canyon or the Salama Canyon, also called the Red Canyon. The Colored Canyon is 800 metres long and about 30 metres high. This part of Egypt used to be underwater, but erosion has created extraordinary rock formations with beautiful colors and lines. A visit to the Salama Canyon combines well with a trip to Dahab.
