Village Above the Clouds Bali

When you walk on to the property, you’re instantly wowed by the location of Village Above the Clouds! The cottages are build on the top of a hill and the view is absolutely stunning.

What makes this eco-boutique hotel so special, is the work of the owner Joseph. He runs a Freedom School for children of the village right across the street from the hotel. He gives them English & music lessons and teaches them how to recycle. Hotel guests are welcome to visit the school.
The staff at Desa Atas Awan (Village Above the Clouds) consists of people from the village that Joseph is training. This way he provides them a better future. Communication can be difficult, but be patient, they will help you any way they can. It’s all done with love.

Don’t expect luxury here. The cottages are basic, with no air conditioning or fan. You don’t need these though, because it cools down at night. Everything looks great! We slept in the Sunrise Suite, with our own “plunge pool”, good for the blood flow!

Breakfast & lunch are delicious and fresh. There are a lot of great options on the menu, like superfood smoothies, lovely veggie burgers and the amazing Kopi Luwak coffee! This was my favorite start of the day ever! It’s wise to buy some snacks, for when you get hungry at night. They don’t serve anything after 8.30 pm. But there’s always some tea and coffee available.

Joseph is really involved with all his guests and askes around in the morning if everyone is happy. He invited us to join him to go to the birthday of a temple nearby and visit a Barong. So special! All of a sudden we were part of the local festivities, joined the walk to another village, ate at the market and were blessed in the temple. I’ll never forget this day.

In the store at the hotel they sell clothing and jewelry. The profits go to charity & the Freedom School. Desa Atas Awan is perfect for whoever wants to visit the real Bali. Rent a scooter and visit the beautiful lakes in the area. Stop for a swim at your private waterfall and eat at a local restaurant.

Views and yoga does not make up the amount of bad service experienced here.

Uncooked chicken for dinner (with only the top layer seared) and no hot water for the entire stay. It was a dreadful experience. Price paid was double the going rate for room on Agoda, TripAdvisor and Hotels. Trip booked on bookyogaretreats.com. Made the manager and all the staff there is a nightmare to deal with. Read my entire experience on TripAdvisor > https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g608480-d12987950-Reviews-Atas_Awan_Retreat-Baturiti_Bali.html

I will definitely not be returning here and do not recommend anyone staying here unless you want to waste your time hunting down staff to address issues that they know about (hot water). Plenty of reviews on bookyogaretreats.com with guests complaining about the same hot water issue I experienced. This has got to be the worst stay I have experienced in my life.

If you want to waste your time instead of enjoying what Bali has to offer, have cold water showers and deal with staff who don’t know how to deliver an adequate level of guest service, please – come here!

Hi Jennifer, I am so sorry to hear that your experience was different than mine. Like I wrote in my blog: this is no luxury retreat, but I loved everything about it and did not miss the warm water. I think we had warm water, so maybe they had a problem with that during the days you were there. I would recommend writing this review on Tripadvisor too so these issues can be fixed. I loved this place so much!
