Restaurant Encanto by José Avillez: vegetarian haute cuisine
Restaurant Encanto by top chef José Avillez is a unique vegetarian restaurant in Lisbon. Those who have read my previous blog posts about Lisbon know that I am a fan of this chef. During my previous visit to the city, I was so impressed by the exceptional dishes at restaurant Mini Bar. Since then, José Avillez has created no less than 7 restaurants in his hometown of Lisbon: Belcanto, Mini Bar, Encanto, Bairro do Avillez, Cantinho do Avillez, Pizzeria Lisboa and Gourmet Experience El Corte Inglés. Now that I am back in one of my favorite cities in Europe, I want to taste more from this chef and I book a table at restaurant Encanto…

Restaurants Lisbon | highlights and tips | city break
At first we cannot find the entrance to the restaurant. Turns out we have to ring the bell and then we step into the “hidden” restaurant. The atmosphere is informal and cozy. Whereas at restaurant Belcanto, right next door, the chic, white table linen welcomes you, the atmosphere at restaurant Encanto is more homely and warm.
The special first course | restaurant Encanto by José Avillez | Lisbon city break
We are treated to a 12-course vegetarian “tasting menu.” The first course of small dishes is an instant hit. The absolute highlight is the imitation of a salted peanut with paprika and lime leaf. Next to it is a radiant, golden egg with soft hummus. We are also surprised by a fresh ceviche on a crispy base.

The black rice with truffle is heaven on a plate | restaurant Encanto by José Avillez | Lisbon city break
Course after course, my American travel friend and I sigh “oooh’s” and “aaaahh’s. We sip cold pine nut milk and want to lick our plates after the divinely delicious black rice with truffle. It is almost impossible not to lapse into superlatives. Each dish is a small work of art packed with flavor. When the candle on the table goes out, this is immediately noticed by the service and replaced. The love is in the details.

The ingredients for the creative dishes come from local farmers, with a focus on seasonal produce. As far as I’m concerned, restaurant Encanto is a must visit during your Lisbon city break! This tasting menu costs €95 pp.
