Things to do in Ella Sri Lanka: Your Complete Guide

Ella is one of those places that gets under your skin in the best possible way. Compact enough to walk everywhere, dramatic enough to stop you mid-sentence: waterfalls, misty tea fields, a nine-arch railway bridge that looks like it was built specifically for your camera roll. Ella town itself is essentially one long main street, which sounds limiting until you realise that street contains some of the best food, friendliest locals and most spectacular views in all of Sri Lanka. I stayed five nights, spent one of them doing absolutely nothing, and have zero regrets. Whether you are travelling solo or with friends, Ella Sri Lanka delivers every time. Here are the best things to do in Ella, with everything you need for a perfect stay.

Introduction to Ella town Sri Lanka

Ella town sits at around 1,000 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, a two-hour drive from Kandy and a world away from the beach towns on the coast. The elevation means it is cooler here, the air smells of tea and something almost alpine, and the light on a clear morning is the kind that makes you take too many photos and regret nothing. It is a small place: one main street, a handful of side roads, and a community of travellers, digital nomads and locals who all seem to end up at the same spots by the end of the day.

What makes Ella special is the combination. You have proper hiking within walking distance of your guesthouse, waterfalls a short tuk-tuk ride away, some of the best viewpoints in Sri Lanka within a morning’s reach, and a food and café scene that punches well above the town’s size. Four nights is the sweet spot for doing it properly. Give yourself five if you want a day to do nothing at all, which I also recommend. Ella Sri Lanka is also one of the most welcoming places for solo travellers, with a relaxed backpacker circuit that makes meeting people feel effortless.

Things to do in Ella Sri Lanka: Nine Arch Bridge train

Best things to do in Ella Sri Lanka

Ella punches well above its weight for a town this size. The best things to do in Ella range from early morning hikes with sunrise views to afternoon tuk-tuk rides through tea country and lazy lunches at cliffside restaurants. Below are the experiences I would do again without hesitation.

Nine Arches Bridge

Walk out via the main road and back through the jungle; it is a safe, easy route and one of the most satisfying short walks in Ella. The train passes every hour, so check the timetable at your accommodation before you leave. Grab a coffee at Starbeans Café around the corner from Hangover Hostels first; they open early and do excellent soy lattes. When it has rained, the last stretch to the nine arches bridge in Sri Lanka can be slippery, and watch out for the occasional friendly leech. The Nine Arches Bridge is also a stop on the Ella Full-Day Landmarks tour if you want a guide to handle the logistics.

Little Adam’s Peak Sri Lanka

This is an easy hike with a seriously impressive payoff. The path is well-marked and the last section is a short climb, but the panoramic views at the top make every step worth it. Go in the morning before the clouds roll in. Afterwards, head straight to 98 Acres Resort for lunch: twelve small curry dishes with rice, and far better than anything else I ate in Ella. You can also book a guided Little Adam’s Peak, Nine Arches and Waterfalls tour that combines all three in one morning.

Ella Rock sunrise hike – Things to do in Ella

Leave around 07:30 so you are back before the midday heat. Download Maps.me with offline maps before you go, and do not tackle this one solo; it is easy to take a wrong turn. Follow the train tracks in the direction of Kilella, cross the large bridge and look for the sacred tree on the left. The trail starts downhill immediately after it. After crossing the next bridge, the path looks like it continues left, but go right over the bamboo stump. There is no sign; this confused me too.

The final stretch is a 30-minute climb. At the top, also visit the second viewpoint with the Buddha statue. Book the private Ella Rock sunrise hike if you prefer a guided experience. One practical note: watch out for dogs on this trail. We were followed by an aggressive pack and nearly turned back; it was a bit unsettling. Even a small scratch requires a rabies shot, so take it seriously. An experienced guide might be a very good idea here.

Ravana Falls: a short trip from Ella

Ravana Falls is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and an easy stop from Ella town, about a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride. It gets busy later in the day, so go in the morning for the best light and fewest crowds. Combine it with a visit to Ravana Cave just above the falls if you have energy to spare. The Nine Arch Bridge, Waterfalls and Tea tour combines Ravana Falls with the bridge and a tea plantation in one easy day.

Lipton’s Seat and the tea fields

This is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Sri Lanka and well worth the early start. On a clear morning, the views over the rolling tea fields stretch as far as you can see; on a cloudy morning, you are essentially standing in the sky. The tuk-tuk safari to Lipton’s Seat and the tea fields is one of the best value experiences in the area, and the Lipton Seat tea tasting and plucking experience adds a hands-on layer if you want to understand where your breakfast cup actually comes from. There is also a tea adventure tour in Haputale with village lunch for a longer day out.

Udawalawe safari and onward transfer – Things to do in Ella

After Ella, a night at Udawalawe National Park is one of the best next moves you can make. Elephants in the wild, without any of the ethical concerns you get at the so-called orphanages. I stayed one night at The Countryside Udawalawe and booked the safari through them; the driver was excellent and they offer a great pick-up from Ella and drop-off in Hiriketiya afterwards. You can also book the Udawalawe safari and Tangalle transfer directly through GetYourGuide.

One reminder: never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden or washed by tourists, and always research any “orphanage” or “shelter” before you go. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage chains animals underwater. Do not go there.

Sri Lankan cooking class and rent your own tuk-tuk

A traditional Sri Lankan cooking class in Ella is a brilliant afternoon activity, especially if you have been eating the same dal curry for a week and want to understand what actually goes into it. For exploring the area at your own pace, renting a tuk-tuk from TukTuk Rental is one of the most fun and flexible ways to travel around Sri Lanka. They rent tuk-tuks from locals, which means your money goes directly to a local family rather than a large company. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to go off the main tourist routes.

Café Chill and Matey Hut | Things to do in Ella Sri Lanka

Best restaurants in Ella Sri Lanka – Things to do in Ella

Chill Café is, by a comfortable margin, the best place for food and drinks in Ella. I tried other spots and kept coming back. The beanbags upstairs are where half the backpacker community ends up every evening, and it is a brilliant place to meet other travellers. I reunited with people I met here for the rest of my Sri Lanka trip.

Gem & Berries is perfect for breakfast and lunch: super fresh, lots of vegan options and exceptionally friendly service. For the best curries on the island, go to 98 Acres after your Little Adam’s Peak hike; twelve small dishes with rice that completely outclass the famous Matey Hut, which I found overrated and not worth the queue. Café One Love is the spot for late night cocktails when everything else is winding down.

Tip on Ayurveda massages: they are offered everywhere in Sri Lanka, but be selective. As a woman, always ask for a female masseur. During Ayurveda massage, the chest area is also treated with oil, and this should always be done by a woman. Do not let anyone pressure you otherwise. In Kandy I had a fantastic Ayurveda massage at Green Chaya.

Getting to Ella: train from Kandy to Ella Sri Lanka

Taking the train from Kandy to Ella Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Asia, eight hours through tea plantations, misty mountains and tiny stations that feel like they belong in a different century. Trains run on Sri Lankan time, which means my train was two hours late. Plan accordingly and enjoy the ride.

The scenery from the observation car is the reason people fly to Sri Lanka. Rolling tea fields, dramatic gorges, waterfalls visible from your window: it is one of those travel experiences that actually lives up to the hype. Book your seat in advance, especially if you want a spot in the observation car, as these go fast in high season. You can check the full Kandy to Ella train guide for timetables, ticket types and exactly where to sit for the best views. Staying connected throughout the journey is easy with a Saily eSIM, which you can set up before you even board.

Keep in mind that Ella gets surprisingly cold in the evenings; bring a warm layer even if you arrived from the coast sweating through your shirt.
