Weligama Sri Lanka: surfing, hotels, hostels and restaurants

Weligama Sri Lanka … I have traveled to Sri Lanka 4 times already and it feels like my home away from home. The 2nd and 3rd time I spend all my time on the south coast. The ‘danger’, when you start your trip here, is that you don’t want to leave the ocean anymore. All the beautiful beaches, the relaxed surf vibe, the nice cafes and digital nomad hotspots, make the south coast a paradise where you won’t get bored. I wrote blog posts about the beautiful bay Hiriketiya and my favorite hangout Dots Bay House. This time I stayed in Weligama, Midigama and Ahangama for longer periods of time. Next month I will be going back for my 3rd visit…. Here’s a list of all my Weligama tips and highlights!

Weligama Sri LankaWeligama Sri Lanka | surfing, hostels, hotels & restaurants | tips & highlights

Weligama is the place for anyone who has never touched a surf board before and has now gathered enough courage to try a little nose dive. There are plenty of good surf schools and accommodations here. Because Weligama is located in a bay, the conditions are good almost every day. But even if you prefer to keep your cavities salt-free, you can also have a great time here. For example: get ice cream at Cruising Smoothly! Here’s a list of all of my other favorites!

Rent a tuktuk – promo code
If you are looking for an amazing way to explore Sri Lanka, rent your own tuktuk at TukTuk Rental! They rent tuktuks from locals to boost their income. A great way to travel around, visit all the places off the mainstream tourist route and support a local family as well! I have partnered up with them: use my code “LittleWanderbook” on their website for a good discount! Go to tuktukrental.com to book your tuktuk.

Great surf schools & surf camps in Weligama

Although I, obviously, haven’t tested them all myself, I’ve heard many good stories about the schools below from other travelers. Most spots offer all-in packages: lodging, food, surf and yoga lessons. You have to spend many hours in the ocean to learn how to surf and be willing to nose dive… a lot, but from the moment you are able to stand on your board for the first time, it is incredibly addictive!

MY STAY AT SOLID SURF HOUSE WELIGAMA

LaPoint: great organization, with locations all over the world. Not cheap, but LaPoint works with carefully selected professionals and the accommodations always look stunning and luxurious. They are also featured in my blog post on the best surf and yoga retreats around the world.
Kima Surf: wonderful place, with great reviews and you surf 2 times a day here. Loved the breakfast and the pool so much!
Layback Surf Camp: a somewhat smaller school, with a very cozy rooftop! A travel friend raved about her days here.

ROOMS & RATES AT CEYLON SLIDERS

Book your accommodations with locals as much as possible, to support the economy. In Sri Lanka you will find many beautiful home stays and small hotels run by locals fully equipped with modern conveniences. For example, within crawling distance of the popular Doctor’s House, the best place to dance on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is Seadina Coral Home. After a night of sweaty dancing nextdoor, you’ll be in your lovely air-conditioned room in two blinks of an eye and the next morning the owner will prepare you a huge breakfast to heal a possible hangover. Even bicycle rental is included. I loved it here.

ALL MY AHANGAMA HIGHLIGHTS

Never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden and, even at an “orphanage” or “shelter”, do your research in advance to check if the animals are treated well. At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, the animals are chained up underwater. Do not go there!
