The beautiful beaches, the relaxed surf vibe, the cafes and digital nomad spots make it a place where you do not want to leave the ocean. Weligama Sri Lanka on the southern coast is a popular destination and the place for anyone who has never touched a surfboard before and has now gathered enough courage to try a nose dive. Trust me, you should! There are good surf schools and accommodations here, and because Weligama sits in a bay, the conditions are manageable almost every day. Even if you prefer to keep your cavities salt-free, you will have a great time. Get ice cream at Cruising Smoothly, explore the coast by tuktuk or sign up for a cooking class. Here are all my favorites.

Best things to do in Weligama Sri Lanka

Surf lesson with professional photo experience

Weligama bay is one of the best spots in the world to learn how to surf, and this surf lesson with professional photo experience is the perfect way to start. Weligama Beach, the main beach, is a two-kilometer shallow sandy stretch with gentle waves that’s also perfect for swimming, so it’s ideal for beginners who want to keep the surfing angle front and center.

A qualified instructor teaches you the basics in the bay, and the gentle setup is especially good for a first surf session while a photographer captures every wipeout and every moment you actually stand up. Small groups mean the instructor has time for you. The photos alone make it worth every rupee. The long sandy beach, with some beach bars is perfect for a relaxed beach day too!

One of the most memorable things to do in Weligama is cook a proper Sri Lankan meal from scratch with a local chef. This cooking class in Weligama takes you through the spices, techniques and flavours that make Sri Lankan food so addictive.

You visit a local market in the town, where you can also find handicrafts and souvenirs, including local lace-making and batik textiles, prepare the dishes yourself and eat what you make. A great way to connect with the culture beyond the beach while tapping into Weligama’s vibrant culinary scene, especially fresh seafood and southern Sri Lankan cuisine.

Day trip to Ella from Weligama Sri Lanka

The hill country around Ella is one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Sri Lanka. A day trip to Ella from Weligama is the best way to see it without an overnight stay. You pass tea plantations, waterfalls and the Nine Arch Bridge. If you want more time up there, the train from Kandy to Ella is one of the great rail journeys of Asia and worth building into your itinerary.

Udawalawe safari: elephants the right way

Combine a drop to Ella with a Udawalawe National Park safari for one of the most rewarding days in Sri Lanka. The park is home to hundreds of wild elephants roaming freely, alongside water buffalo, crocodiles and countless birds. This is how wildlife experiences should be.

Never visit a park where elephants are ridden, chained or used for performances. Even at so-called “orphanages” or “shelters”, always do your research first. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage chains animals in water. The same applies to sea turtles: never touch wild turtles or marine animals. Watching from a respectful distance is always the better choice.

Rent your own tuktuk

The most fun way to explore Weligama Sri Lanka and the south coast is to rent your own tuktuk at TukTuk Rental. They rent tuktuks from locals, boosting their income while giving you a great little vehicle. Visit places off the tourist route, take detours through rice fields and discover beaches that the tour buses never reach.

Galle Fort is also a short drive away, about an hour from Weligama depending on traffic, making it an easy tuktuk trip. I put the galleries, shops and my favourite hotels in a separate guide to things to do in Galle.

The bay has a great range of stays for every budget, from surf camp dorms to comfortable guesthouses and I tried many of them! Moving up the coast after this? I made a list for where to stay in Ahangama.

Hotels and guesthouses in Weligama Sri Lanka

Ceylon Sliders is where I ended my second trip to Sri Lanka and slept like a princess in a spacious room. The food and sunset views here are reason enough to book it. The place was started by 2 Swedes and works as a hotel, cafe and shop in one: a courtyard cafe on the ground floor, a rooftop bar looking out over the bay and a small shop with their own label. The 2 island suites upstairs have four poster beds, sea views and a private balcony of around 15 m2. There is also a cheaper room tucked in behind the cafe without an ocean view, easier on your budget but louder at breakfast.

Madla Rooms is a well-located option for travellers who want comfort without the hostel vibe. It sits in a quiet lane about 5 minutes on foot from the bay and is run by a local family. Rooms have a private entrance, air conditioning, soundproofing and a walk-in shower. Bicycles are available if you want to reach the surf points without hailing a tuktuk every morning, and the family packs lunch boxes for day trips.

Boutique hotels in Weligama Sri Lanka

KOMOREBI opened in 2025 on the beach side at Kapparatota, halfway between the centre of Weligama and Ahangama. Rooms come with air conditioning, a private bathroom and a balcony, and there is a garden, a sea view terrace and an ice bath for after your session. The Italian owner cooks, so you can break the rice and curry streak without leaving the property. Fisherman’s Reef is close by; the beginner waves in the bay are a 5 minute drive.

Stay Ceylon has been family run since 2006 and sits right opposite the bay beach, 3 minutes on foot. There are 15 rooms, the biggest being loft suites with high ceilings, wide patio doors and a sea view balcony. Downstairs you find a restaurant and a bar with live music, plus sunbeds out front on the sand. The railway station is a 5 minute walk, handy if you are heading to Galle or Ella by train.

Cascara Resort opened in 2026 and lies inland along the river, about 1 km from the bay. Rooms are large at around 80 m2, each with a private patio and a half open shower, and the pool sits in the middle of the garden. You need a tuktuk to reach the surf, which is exactly why it stays this quiet.

Within walking distance of The Doctor’s House (not in Weligama!), the best place to dance on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is Surf Lodge Madiha. I had a lovely time here. From the garden with its beanbags you walk straight onto the beach, and the cafe attached to the lodge is a good one. If you are travelling solo, this is one of the easiest places on the south coast to meet other people. The rooms are enormous and more luxurious than the words surf lodge suggest. Loved it all!

Best surf schools and camps in Weligama Sri Lanka

Many surf camps in Weligama offer all-in packages with lodging, food, surf and yoga, and board rentals are easy to find along the bay if you do not bring your own gear. You have to spend many hours in the water to learn how to surf and be willing to nose dive a lot, but from the moment you stand on your board for the first time, it is incredibly addictive. Moochies: always busy, but with good reason. Good coffee and try the pancakes! Loved it all.
Deli Ceylon Nomad Cafe Boutique: a great pick for highly praised brunch and coffee.
Hangtime Hostel: friendly all-day hangout with a nice view of the bay, especially if you’re in the mood for smoothie bowls. It can get crowded and noisy though.

Ceylon Sliders: the best place for sunset drinks in the bay, though The Cliff is another great pick for sunset views and cocktails. The food and cocktails are seriously good. The staff like to flirt, so your G&T is served with a little ego boost.

Mirissa Beach is another lovely stop for sunbathing and swimming, and if you visit from November to April, whale watching is especially popular there.

For snorkeling, head to Polhena Beach for shallow water, rich marine life and the chance to spot giant turtles; nearby hatcheries can also be educational places to learn about baby turtles.
