Ahangama tips and highlights – Sri Lanka

I like to go to Sri Lanka every European winter, so by now it is my second home. The south coast is bursting with pristine beaches, excellent surf spots and lively coastal towns. I love Hiriketiya and usually spend a good amount of time in Midigama as well: the ideal spot to visit Ahangama and Weligama too. Weligama is a great place for those who want to try their first nose dive with a surfboard. You’ll find lots of nice restaurants, coworking spots and bars there, but the beaches are not as nice as in Midigama and Ahangama. Ahangama is bursting with beautiful boutique hotels, brunch spots and fine restaurants. This is my 2026 update! These are my Midigama/ Ahangama tips and highlights!

Renting a scooter in Ahangama

Tip: rent a scooter! Just be sure to apply for an international driver’s license at home before you leave. To drive a scooter or tuk tuk in Sri Lanka you also need a Sri Lankan driving permission. You get this at Department of Motor Traffic in Colombo. It costs around 35 USD and takes about 3-4 hours. Usually the international driver’s license is fine, but the policy seems to be getting stricter. So check in advance. If you want to drive a tuk tuk you definitely need the permit!

Renting a scooter or tuk tuk gives you easy access to nearby attractions and beaches, making it convenient to explore the area. Alternatively, ride-hailing apps like PickMe or Uber are also available for getting around Ahangama and offer another hassle-free transport option.

Kabalana Beach is the main beach in Ahangama, known for its relaxed surf vibe, sun beds for lounging, and some beach clubs with a good pool. One of the best Ahangama tips for first-time visitors: spend at least one morning here before exploring further.

The surf culture in Ahangama is real. Popular spots include The Rock, Marshmallows and Sticks, with something for every level. The Rock at Kabalana Beach is a perfect A-frame wave and one of the South Coast’s best breaks for advanced surfers. Reef breaks dominate here, so intermediates and up will feel right at home. Beginners do well in front of the Timeless Villa at Kabalana, where the waves are forgiving and the water warm. Surf schools and board rentals are easy to find throughout the village. Book your surf lesson here! Want to explore further? Rent your own tuktuk via TukTuk Rental and find your own secret spot.

Ahangama Tips: Best Nights Out

Tuesday: ‘open mic night’ at Surfing Wombats after that you can dance the night away on the rooftop across the street at Lay back @ Lazies.

Wednesday & Saturday: get a tuk tuk to The Doctor’s House in Madiha. This used to be a “cash only” place, but maybe that has changed by now.

Thursday & Sunday: dance at Lamana (including a skateramp), prepare to sweat, and if you want to continue your night head to Hakuna Matata.

Friday: Trax. This funky spot, with a large garden, is pretty much on the train tracks, hence the name. There are often great nights with live music and DJs.

Saturday: Terra Garden. Skateramp + the best DJs in a beautiful jungle setting.

Sunday: live music, BBQ and/ or a DJ at sunset at Soul & Surf.

Bars and sunset spots in Ahangama

Ahangama features a lively bar scene, with venues like Hotel de Uncles and Ceylon Sliders offering cocktails and a good atmosphere, especially during sunset. Rooftop bars are also popular here for evening entertainment and panoramic views, perfect for casual drinks and soaking in the scenery.

Want to combine your trip with a surf or yoga retreat? Read about my stay at a surf camp in Weligama or check my review of the Salty Pelican in Hiriketiya.

Sunset drinks at Ceylon Sliders are always a good idea. One of my favorite spots!

Tip: skip Mirissa and Unawatuna (a day trip is enough); too touristy and full of Russians, who are not always on their best behavior… In Hikkaduwa you will find the impressive tsunami museum, which is definitely worth a visit, but other than that, I did not really like it there. If you’re looking for a great alternative, especially for surfing during the rainy season, consider Arugam Bay. It’s a prime destination when other beach towns are off-season.

After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without travel insurance. Whether you are surfing, hiking jungle trails or riding a scooter along the coast, things happen and being sick or injured alone in a foreign country without cover is something you really do not want to deal with. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible, affordable and easy to arrange even while you are already on the road

Surfing in Ahangama can be quite “intense.” In particular, the spots near Kabalana Beach are often rough and the risk of the wellknown “washing machine experience” is very high here: trying to figure out which way is up. If you prefer to keep your contact lenses in place and want friendlier waves, you should head to Marshmellow Point, Lazy Right or Fishermen’s (depending on the swell of course).

Ahangama Tips: the most beautiful beaches

Wild Beach
Midigama Beach
Ahangama Beach: located between Le Café French Bistro and Dream Sea Surf Camp, Ahangama Beach is known for its soft sand and relatively small waves, making it ideal for swimming.
Secret Beach: This small cove offers calm waters and a sandy bottom, making it arguably the best beach for swimming in the area, although it can get crowded.
Kabalana Beach: Considered the nicest beach in Ahangama, Kabalana features a broad stretch of golden sand lined with palm trees. It’s popular with both advanced surfers and beginners.
Paradise Cove: fancy beach club, with comfortable daybeds.

Nearby Attractions: Ahangama tips for day trips

Ahangama’s location on the south coast makes it easy to explore. For wildlife: Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants. Herds roam freely, water buffalo included. Book a jeep safari and bring a camera.

Galle Fort is a short drive away and worth an afternoon. Cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, good coffee and rooftop bars with sea views. Go in the morning before the tour buses arrive.

Skip Mirissa and Unawatuna for more than a day trip; both are fun but packed. Weligama is great for beginner surfers and a laid-back afternoon. For something quieter, take a boat safari on Koggala Lake: birds, cinnamon trees and local life along the water. I loved it.

Conclusion:

Ahangama has a way of keeping you longer than planned. The surf is good, the food scene keeps improving every year, and the boutique hotels are some of the best on the south coast. Spend your mornings at a reef break, your afternoons at a brunch spot with good coffee, and your evenings at Ceylon Sliders watching the sun go down. It is that kind of place.

Day trips from Ahangama

Beyond the beach, there is plenty to keep you busy. Udawalawe National Park is an easy day trip for wild elephant sightings, Galle Fort is worth an afternoon, and a boat safari on Koggala Lake is one of those slow, beautiful experiences you did not know you needed. Ahangama’s central location on the south coast makes all of it reachable without much effort. And if you want to explore further, Weligama and Hiriketiya are both within easy reach and absolutely worth a few days of your time.

My advice: book a few nights, see how you feel, and don’t be surprised if you end up extending your stay. It happens to everyone.

One more thing: read about my experience with dengue fever before you go. Not fun, but good to be prepared. Find all my other destinations and tips on the Sri Lanka overview page.

Plan your trip

Never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden and, even at an “orphanage” or “shelter”, do your research in advance to check if the animals are treated well. At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, the animals are chained up underwater. Do not go there!
