Hiriketiya is one of my favourite spots in Sri Lanka and I usually spend most of my time here and in Ahangama. Every European winter I travel to Sri Lanka and I’ve visited this beautiful island 5 times already. It feels like my second home. Although it is getting busier, it is still a beautiful place with some of the best places to stay on the south coast, great food, nice beach bars, and one of the most photogenic horseshoe bays in the country. Almost everything is within walking distance and the area has such a relaxed atmosphere. These are my Hiriketiya Sri Lanka tips, updated with all my latest discoveries!

Introduction to Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is a small beach town on Sri Lanka’s south coast, right next to Dikwella. Everything revolves around Hiriketiya Bay: a horseshoe-shaped bay with reliable surf, boutique hotels, good local food and a laid-back atmosphere that still feels like a hidden gem. Hiriketiya Beach has waves for all levels, a beach break for beginners and a reef point break for the more advanced.

The bay is compact, the jungle comes right up to the sand and at low tide the whole curve turns golden under the palm trees, which makes it one of the most scenic and least crowded stretches of the southern coast. The town itself is one long strip of cafés, guesthouses, surf schools and yoga studios, which sounds small until you realise that strip holds some of the best food and most interesting people you will meet in Sri Lanka.

Surfers, solo travellers, digital nomads and couples who want to slow down: a tropical paradise without the crowds of the bigger beach towns. Below you will find where to stay on every budget, where to eat, and which day trips and nearby beaches are worth your time.

Best boutique hotels in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya is small, so nearly everything sits within a 10 minute walk of the bay. The choice runs from dorm beds and plain guesthouses set back from the water to a handful of design rooms right on the sand, with a double room around 50 to 70 dollars in high season. For solo travellers the split is simple: stay bay side for company, up the road for sleep. Book early between December and March, that is when the bay fills up.

Dots Bay House: my home away from home during my first 2 Sri Lanka trips. Not ideal if you like peace and quiet though, but the food, atmosphere and location are unbeatable. It is a great spot for solo travellers because of the dorms and the events. They have some pretty impressive DJ, open mic and live music nights. Even when I don’t stay here, I like to hangout at Dots with a journal or my laptop and always meet other travellers.

Try the really good and intense yoga classes by Marleen in the yoga shala. Dots opened in December 2015 with one shipping container and 5 rooms, and now runs 9 rooms plus a 15 bed dorm, a swimming pool and free surfboard use for guests!

Salt House: a beautiful, design-led retreat with yoga. Salt House is one of the best spots in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka for those who want comfort without the party energy. There are 8 rooms with open-air bathrooms and private terraces set around the garden, a pool, and a yoga shala with classes twice a day. Surfboards are free to use and the bay is a short walk away.

Wilson’s Place: a family-run guesthouse with a warm, personal feel and one of the friendliest hosts in Hiriketiya. It sits about 600 metres back from the beach, which buys you a garden, a terrace and quiet nights instead of bar noise. Rooms have air conditioning, there is a 24 hour front desk and the family sorts out scooters and taxis for you. Travellers looking for surf camps often choose more package-style stays nearby.

Best budget stays in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

House on the Bend: spacious, basic rooms with everything you need. The breakfast here is so good it feels like home. Solid choice if you are travelling on a budget. I stayed here for almost 2 weeks, that felt a bit too long, but would highly recommend it for shorter stays. The walk to the bay takes about 6 minutes and the 9 rooms sit around a garden with a shared kitchen, a restaurant and free parking. Breakfast comes à la carte with Sri Lankan and continental options.

The Yard Hiriketiya: stunning rooms in a prime location and you can use the fully equipped kitchen which is so nice to have. Bathrooms are a bit dark though. I stayed here during my last visit. There are 6 en suite rooms around a courtyard, the shared kitchen has free tea, coffee and filtered water, and you can borrow yoga mats. It stands on the main road 2 minutes from the beach, so count on some music in the evening.

Beach stays and studio apartments in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

La Playa Studios Hiriketiya: beautifully designed studio apartments with a strong aesthetic and great value for the quality you get. The studios sit right on the beach, each with a sea view terrace and a proper kitchenette, so you can cook on the days you are done with rice and curry.

La Playa Beach Club: the beach club sister property, right on the bay. Stylish, social and brilliantly located. The restaurant has the best wine list in Hiriketiya. There are only 3 rooms, all above the club with sea facing balconies. One thing to keep in mind: the pool, the loungers and the restaurant are open to day visitors as well, so it is never just you and the other guests.

Not recommended: Barefoot Backpackers. Had a very bad experience here. Overpriced, not that clean, cold shower and a not particularly welcoming owner. The staff were very friendly, but the place felt entirely focused on extracting money rather than looking after guests.

How to get to Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?

To reach Hiriketiya, 180 km from Colombo, travellers typically need to first get to Dickwella, as public transport does not service Hiriketiya directly. From Colombo, you can take a train from Colombo Fort station to Matara, which takes about 4 hours, and then transfer at the Matara bus station to a local bus heading to Dickwella for around 200 LKR, which takes about 1.5 hours. A tuk-tuk from Matara to Hiriketiya usually costs about 2000 LKR.

If you want to combine the route south with a stop at Wewrukannala Temple, the train from Colombo to Wewrukannala takes about 4 hours. For those travelling from Galle, take a bus along the main highway to Matara, then transfer at the bus station to another bus heading to Dickwella; this journey takes about an hour.

Coming down from the hill country, I would build the train ride from Kandy to Ella into the route first. It is the most scenic way to start the trip south and you end up 4 hours from the bay.

Or even better, rent your own tuktuk from TukTuk Rental and drive the south coast at your own pace. Your money goes directly to a local family rather than a large company.

Dots Bay House

Love this place in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka because of the atmosphere and I loved the Mahu Mahu burger with kimchi! Because of the airconditioning, it is also a great spot to work, if the wifi cooperates.

Duni’s Hoppers

If you want to try tasty traditional hoppers, visit Duni’s. Delicious hoppers for breakfast, brunch or lunch, plus fresh smoothie bowls and good iced coffee.

Raa

A strong new addition with wide views over the surfers. Raa is the best sunset spot in the bay, with delicious food and good cocktails. Try The Tree of Life; you will thank me later.

Betaz

A new sunset spot that has quickly become a local favourite. This fancy restaurant will boost your Insta feed and is a great spot for drinks and dinner. Try the Gin Verde!

Most travellers arrive in Hiriketiya via Kandy and the south coast, often stopping in Weligama for a few days of surf before continuing east to the bay.

More great food spots in Hiriketiya 

There are far more good places to eat here than fit into one section. I have written up the full list in my guide to the best restaurants in Hiriketiya, but beyond these favourites, Hiriketiya is also great for local food, especially Sri Lankan rice and curry. Lemon Grass Cafe does some of the best kottu in Sri Lanka. Roti Hut near hiri beach is a great pick for cheap, tasty roti and kottu.

Isle of Gelato

The ice cream here is extraordinary. A bit pricy, but absolutely worth it!

Smoke and Bitters

The best cocktail bar in the area, with a very extensive menu and a lot of delicious vegan options. It was named one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2022. A lovely place for sunset in Dikwella. Book ahead to make a reservation because the place is almost always fully booked.

Malkoha Studios

A brilliant spot for coffee, healthy bowls and good food with a strong sustainability focus. Good for digital nomads and an easy place to settle in for a few hours.

MOND

Very nice place for coffee, smoothie bowls and other goodies. In the evening they serve cocktails, wine and delicious small dishes. This is one of my all time favourites and it is the place where I love to start my day with a matcha and my journal.

Best things to do in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

Surfing

Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is one of the best surf spots on the south coast, with surf shops around the bay where you can rent gear, book classes, and browse a few surf accessories. The bay has 2 breaks: a beach break in the center, good for beginners and intermediates, and a left-hand reef point break for experienced surfers.

Surf schools are easy to find and most offer lessons for all levels. Lessons usually cost around 6,000 to 8,000 LKR. Surfboard rentals are about 1,000 LKR per hour. The best time to learn is between December and February, when the waves are smaller and more manageable. From May to October the swell picks up and conditions get choppier, which makes it trickier for beginners and tends to appeal more to more advanced surfers.

Be aware of rocks and sea urchins in the water, especially on the left side of the beach. The best thing to do is not to walk but just hop on your board. I got a little piece of sea urchin in my foot and that was not very pleasant. Nothing serious, but you are a bit crippled and because of the heat you can quickly get infections. Lesson learned.

Yoga in Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya has a strong yoga scene. Dots Bay House, Salt House and Arise all offer regular classes, as does Serene Villa slightly further out. Sunrise flows, restorative evening sessions, drop-in classes for 2000 rupees, it is all here.

Massage at The Massage Shed

My absolute favourite massage spot in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka. You are greeted with a cold towel and homemade iced tea, and the massages are the best I have had anywhere on the south coast.

Visit the relaxing Tonic Spa! My Ayurveda back massage was so good. When you book a full body massage, always ask for a masseur of the same sex. Go shopping at L’Atelier (enter at your own risk), Le Ketiya and the shop next to Loco’s.

Day trips from Hiriketiya Sri Lanka: Ella and Udawalawe

Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is well placed for day trips into the interior. Udawalawe National Park is about 1.5 hours north of Hiriketiya. It also makes a great base alongside Weligama and Ahangama for a longer south coast itinerary. Book a day trip to Ella from Hiriketiya, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa or Tangalle and see the Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and Ravana Falls in one day.

For something longer, the 2-day trip to Ella gives you more time to explore the hill country properly, and my Ella guide covers what is actually worth your time up there. The drop to Ella combined with an Udawalawe safari is one of the best value experiences on the south coast: elephants in the wild followed by a scenic transfer or private transfer into the mountains. Sights near Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

Several sights sit within easy reach of Hiriketiya Sri Lanka. The Hummanaya Blowhole is a natural wonder and one of the largest blowholes in the world, sending ocean spray up to 100 feet high in dramatic bursts. The Wewrukannala Vihara Temple is known for its giant seated Buddha and intricate murals, providing insight into local Buddhist culture.

Mulkirigala Rock Temple is also worth a visit. It is built around a 205-meter solitary rock formation. Dondra Lighthouse, located at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, is a historic landmark with panoramic coastal views and is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka. For a quieter stretch of coast, nearby Silent Beach is highly recommended. Monkeys are also often seen around the palms near Hiriketiya and these surrounding sights.

Is Hiriketiya worth a visit?

Yes! Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is known for its sheltered horseshoe bay, which makes it one of the best surf spots for beginners on the south coast. It is also popular for yoga, healthy food, boutique guesthouses and a laid-back atmosphere that attracts digital nomads and slow travellers. Despite growing in popularity, it has kept much of its charm. Dickwella Beach is close and also worth a visit!

How many days do you need in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?

At least 3 to 5 days. 2 days is enough to get a feel for the bay, but give yourself longer if you want to take surf lessons, do a yoga retreat, visit Ella on a day trip and properly work through the restaurant list.

Is Hiriketiya good for beginners?

Yes, the sheltered bay is one of the best learning spots on the Sri Lanka south coast. There are many little surf schools that offer lessons for all levels and the waves are generally manageable for first-timers. If you prefer to go to a real surf camp, I would highly recommend Kima Surf Hiriketiya.

After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without travel insurance. What is the best time to visit Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?

November to April is the dry season on the south coast and the best time to visit Hiriketiya Sri Lanka for surf and sunshine. December and January are the busiest and most expensive months, so if you want the good weather without the crowds, aim for March or April.

The shoulder seasons of September to November and April to May are quieter and cheaper, though some restaurants and bars close during the low season, so check ahead. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, humidity and rougher seas. It is not the most comfortable time to be on the beach, but prices drop significantly and you will have more of the bay to yourself.
