Best Restaurants in Hiriketiya: My Favorite Spots in 2026
What does a perfect day in Hiriketiya look like? It starts with a matcha at MOND, a lazy morning on your surfboard, a hopper from Duni’s at noon and ends with cocktails at Betaz while the sun drops behind the bay. The food scene here has quietly become one of the best on the Sri Lankan south coast. Most restaurants are within a five-minute walk of each other, which means you can spend your entire trip eating your way through the strip and still feel like you have missed things. Sri Lanka feels like my second home after five visits and these are the best restaurants in Hiriketiya!

Betaz, perfect spot for the sunset | Hiriketiya Sri Lanka
Best restaurants in Hiriketiya: what to expect
Hiriketiya is a tiny, horseshoe-shaped bay tucked away on the Sri Lanka south coast, right next to Dickwella and what it lacks in size it makes up for in serious restaurant credentials. It is one of my favorite spots in Sri Lanka. You’ll find everything you want here: delicious fresh hoppers, generous portions of Sri Lankan rice and curry, wood-fired pizzas, french crêpes, excellent cocktail bars, those trendy smoothie bowls & a few sunset terraces that’ll make you want to ditch your onward plans entirely and just chill out for the day.
The type of people who come to Hiriketiya are a mix of all sorts. You get surfers hanging out after a morning in the waves, digital nomads juggling their laptops and cocktails, solo travellers looking for some adventure and couples who want the laid back experience of slow travel over the hassle of a package resort. And it’s no surprise that the food scene has followed suit; the restaurants here are just casual and relaxed enough to pull up a chair in your board shorts, but the food itself is so good you’ll be dreaming about it long after you leave. Most places are run by the owners themselves and you can tell they truly care about what they’re serving up.

Best restaurants in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka: my favorite spots
Betaz
A beautiful sunset restaurant that has quickly become one of the most talked-about spots in Hiriketiya. The terrace overlooks the ocean and the design is sharp enough to make your phone practically take photos by itself. The food matches the setting: well-executed dishes, a creative drinks menu and cocktails that are so good! Try the Gin Verde! This is the kind of place where you sit down for one drink and leave two hours later with a full dinner and zero regrets.
Raa
One of the newer additions to the best restaurants in Hiriketiya and already a firm favourite. Including some of the best views over the surfers, top-quality food and a cocktail menu that takes itself seriously without being pretentious. The Tree of Life cocktail is showstopper. Go at sunset and stay for dinner. Book ahead.
A practical note: a few of the best restaurants in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka are technically in Dickwella, a short tuktuk ride away. I have included those too because the line between the two is blurry and the quality is worth the extra five minutes. If you want to explore the whole coastline at your own pace, renting a tuktuk from TukTuk Rental makes the most sense. Your money goes directly to a local family.
Raa offers beautiful views and delicious cocktails
MOND – best restaurants in Hiriketiya
My personal all-time favourite in Hiriketiya. In the mornings it is calm and quiet, perfect for a matcha and a journaling session. The smoothie bowls are the best I have had in Sri Lanka and the iced lattes are worth the hike up the hill. In the evenings the atmosphere shifts: small dishes that are easy to share, good wine and cocktails. One of those rare places that works equally well at 8am and 9pm.
Dots Bay House
The social hub of Hiriketiya and one of the best restaurants in the bay for atmosphere. The menu changes all the time, but the pizza oven stays, and the cocktail menu was put together by a well-known Australian shaker. Even when I am not staying at Dots Bay House, I end up here a lot with my journal, a book or my laptop. This is where I always meet other solo travelers.

Duni’s Hoppers – best restaurants in Hiriketiya
If you visit one place for traditional Sri Lankan food, make it Duni’s. The hoppers are the best I have had anywhere on the south coast: crispy at the edges, soft in the middle, served with coconut sambol and dahl and other, less traditional fillings. Fresh smoothie bowls and iced coffee on the menu too. It gets busy and you may end up sharing a table. A must on any best restaurants in Hiriketiya list.
Hiriketiya Seafood Restaurant
No fuss, no Instagram aesthetic, just very good Sri Lankan food and the freshest fish on the strip. Order the rice and curry buffet and add a fish dish on the side. Run by a sweet local family. This restaurant was already open in Hiriketiya during my first visit in January 2020 and the quality of the dishes has never changed.
Pumpkin Cafe
An excellent Sri Lankan buffet with rice and curry that is worth every rupee. Authentic, generous portions and the kind of place that regulars return to every week. Simple, unfussy and very good.
BOOK A DAY TRIP TO ELLA FROM HIRIKETIYA
Breakfast, brunch or lunch at Duni’s Hopper is always a good idea.
Where to eat in Hiriketiya: cafés and all-day spots
Malkoha Studios
The best café at Dickwella beach for digital nomads and anyone who wants to sit down properly. Good coffee, healthy bowls, great food and a strong focus on sustainability. Settle in for a few hours and you will not want to leave. The kind of place that makes remote work a bit easier.
Belika
French crêpes, excellent smoothies and great coffee in a photogenic setting with a pool. Slightly off the main strip which keeps it calmer. One of those spots worth seeking out rather than stumbling across. Do not tell too many people, so we can keep the pool to ourselves….

The Ruin – best restaurants in Hiriketiya
Not a restaurant in the traditional sense but a beach club experience worth including. The sunbeds are among the most comfortable on Hiriketiya beach Sri Lanka and you are looked after from the moment you arrive. Check the minimum spend before you get comfortable. A brilliant way to spend a slow day or a romantic evening.
Isle of Gelato
The ice cream here is delicious! A little pricey by Hiriketiya standards but worth every rupee. Go after a surf session when you need something cold and sweet to boost your energy.

Best restaurants in Hiriketiya: Smoke & Bitters in Dickwella
Smoke & Bitters deserves its own section. Technically in Dickwella rather than Hiriketiya, but close enough to be essential. This place ranked number 14 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list in 2025, which tells you everything about the level of creativity in the cocktails. The food menu is extensive with excellent vegan options and the starters the highlight of the evening. The setting at sunset is beautiful.
Book ahead. It is always full and the walk-in queue can be long. Worth every bit of effort to get a table. A short tuktuk ride from Hiriketiya beach Sri Lanka, five minutes maximum.
Best restaurants in Hiriketiya: hotels with great food
Several of the best places to eat in Hiriketiya are attached to accommodations, which means you do not need to be a guest to enjoy them.
Salt House restaurant
Salt House has one of the best hotel restaurants in Hiriketiya. Design-led, calm and well-executed. A good option for a quieter dinner away from the Dots Bay House energy.
La Playa Beach Club
La Playa Beach Club is right on the bay with the best wine list in Hiriketiya. The bean bag situation is dangerous: you sit down for a glass of wine and wake up three hours later with sand everywhere and no memory of dinner. The small pool helps.

Best restaurants in Hiriketiya: practical tips
A few things worth knowing before you go:
Most restaurants in Hiriketiya do not take reservations, or do not need them. Smoke & Bitters is the exception: always book ahead. Raa and Betaz can also fill up at sunset so arriving early helps. Prices are low by any European standard, even at the higher end of the scale. Tipping is not expected but always appreciated. Most places are cash-friendly and some are cash-only, so carry rupees.

What else should I do in Hiriketiya?
Beyond eating well, Hiriketiya is one of the best beginner surf spots on the Sri Lanka south coast. There is a strong yoga scene, good massage options and you can book a surf week at The Salty. The area also makes a great base alongside Weligama and Ahangama for a longer south coast itinerary.
