If you are wondering what to do in Zadar, the answer is: more than you expect. It has the history without the cruise ship crowds, the bars without the bachelorette chaos, and beautiful sunsets that have made it a must-visit for anyone traveling in Croatia. Why Zadar should be on your Croatia list
My first visit to Zadar left a lasting impression. There’s something about the city’s blend of history, vibrant atmosphere, and Adriatic charm that instantly drew me in. I have visited Croatia several times now and Zadar remains one of my favorites.
Zadar is a great place to experience authentic Croatian culture and is the perfect place to base yourself for exploring the region, with its lively public squares, scenic waterfront, and easy access to nearby islands and national parks. This guide covers the best things to do in Zadar, the best hotels to book, practical tips, and a few honest opinions along the way. Looking for more European city inspiration? My guides to Tallinn and Prague are two of my favorites.
Best things to do in Zadar
1. The Sea Organ and Sun Salutation
The Sea Organ is one of those rare tourist attractions that actually earns its reputation. Architect Nikola Bašić designed this 70-meter-long installation built into the sea steps: as waves push air through the pipes underneath, they produce an ever-changing, hypnotic sound. It is weirdly calming, especially at golden hour when the whole waterfront fills up with locals and visitors just sitting there, listening.
Right next to it, Bašić designed another masterpiece: the Greeting to the Sun, a 22-meter circle of solar panels that absorb sunlight during the day and create a stunning light show at night in constantly shifting colors. The solar panels also power the city quay, making it both beautiful and functional. Arrive around sunset for the full effect. Zadar is famous for its most beautiful sunsets, which Alfred Hitchcock reportedly called the most beautiful in the world, even comparing them favorably to those in Key West, Florida. Both the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun are located along the waterfront promenade and are must-see modern art installations for anyone visiting Zadar. Standing there at dusk, I could not exactly argue.

2. Explore the old town
Zadar’s Old Town sits on a compact peninsula jutting out into the Adriatic, making it easily explorable on foot, with most attractions just minutes walk from each other. Surrounded by ancient old walls you can actually walk along, the Old Town is entered through the main entrance, the impressive Land Gate. Built in 1543 during Venetian rule and considered one of the finest monuments of that era and the historic bridge gate, both of which are architectural highlights and key gateways into the city.
The Forum is the main Roman square and still one of the best-preserved in Croatia. From there, follow the main street toward the harbor and let yourself get distracted by the ice cream shops, because the Croatians take their gelato seriously. Within two minutes of entering the old town I already had a cone in hand. No regrets.
To get more out of the old town, a food tasting and walking tour is a great way to combine both: local specialties like Maraschino cherry liqueur, pršut, and olive oil paired with stories about the city’s long and complicated history.
Book in advance
- Sells out fast in peak season, limited spots: Plitvice Lakes guided day tour
- Popular in summer, book early: Kornati Islands cruise

3. Take a day trip to the Kornati Islands
The Kornati National Park, often called a nautical paradise. A must-visit for anyone interested in island hopping, sailing, swimming, and snorkeling. This stunning archipelago consists of over 89 islands, most of them uninhabited. Offering a remote and pristine escape just off the coast of Zadar. Boat trips through the Zadar Canal and around the surrounding area are a fantastic way to explore the coastal scenery, with opportunities to spot sea turtles and dolphins along the way.
A Kornati and Telašćica cruise is one of the best day trips you can do from Zadar: you sail past dramatic cliffs, swim in the clear water, and stop in the colorful little town of Sali for coffee. We returned completely zen. If you prefer something faster and more adventurous, the Blue Bay speedboat tour covers three islands, includes snorkeling, and ends with cocktails. A solid plan for a summer day.

4. Take a wine cruise – things to do in Zadar
Croatia produces seriously good wine, and a boat trip with unlimited pours is one of the better ways to discover this. The boat tour with unlimited wine and 3 stops combines swimming, local island visits, and Croatian wines throughout the day. For something more upscale, the luxury island boat tour with snorkeling and unlimited wine is worth the upgrade, particularly if you are traveling with someone who appreciates a well-set table on deck.

5. Watch the sunset from the waterfront – things to do in Zadar
Sunsets in Zadar are not just pleasant, they are an event. The entire city seems to migrate to the waterfront around 7 PM. The combination of the Sea Organ’s sounds, the Sun Salutation lighting up, and the sky turning every shade of orange and pink makes for an atmosphere that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
For a more structured experience, the sunset and night cruise with unlimited sparkling wine takes you out on the water during golden hour, which gives you a completely different perspective on the city’s skyline and the coast.

Best things to do in Zadar: day trips worth making
Krka National Park
Krka is one of those places where you take approximately 800 photos and still feel like you have not done it justice. The park is built around a series of travertine waterfalls and emerald green pools, and it is so beautiful that it starts to feel slightly unreal.
The best way to visit is on a Krka Waterfalls day tour with boat ride and guide from Zadar, which includes a boat ride through the lower canyon and a guided walk to the main falls. Plan at least a full day; half a day is never enough here. In autumn the colors are particularly spectacular.

Plitvice Lakes National Park – Things to do in Zadar
If you have not been to Plitvice Lakes yet, add it to your list immediately. This UNESCO destination is famous for its terraced lakes and waterfalls, with cascading turquoise waters connected by wooden walkways. It is consistently voted among Europe’s most beautiful natural landscapes. For once, the hype is entirely justified. Zadar is an excellent base for day trips to Plitvice, which is about a 90-minute drive away.
Book a Plitvice Lakes guided day tour with tickets from Zadar to make the most of your visit. The guide helps you navigate the routes and entrance points. Having tickets pre-arranged means no queueing at the gate.

Planning your Plitvice visit: timing tips – Things to do in Zadar
Timing matters here. In summer, the park opens at 7 AM and early entry is essential. In spring and autumn, starting around 11 AM lets the first tour buses clear before you arrive.
Start at Entrance 1 for the most dramatic section: a waterfall the scale of a film set, crystal clear green water below, and forest trails that feel like a nature documentary. It takes at least three hours just for this section alone. Entrance 2 offers a different perspective and is worth the afternoon if you have the energy.

Šibenik – Things to do in Zadar
Šibenik is a 45-minute drive from Zadar and one of the most atmospheric medieval towns in Croatia. The old town tumbles up a hillside behind the harbor, with narrow stepped streets, stone houses, and a cathedral that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
Game of Thrones fans will recognize it as Braavos: walking into the old town at night really does feel like stepping back into the Middle Ages. From the old fortress, the panoramic view over the city and surrounding islands is excellent. Additionally, Šibenik holds the distinction of being the first European city to have been lit by alternating current electricity, thanks to local boy Nikola Tesla in 1895. History and trivia, all in one visit.
Book a Šibenik 3 Fortresses and Panorama Tour to get the full picture with a local guide who can bring these layers of history to life.

things to do in Zadar: Best hotels
Zadar has a good mix of hotels, from small boutique properties in the old town to options just outside the walls for a bit more space and quiet. Here are the ones worth your attention.
Art Hotel Kalelarga is one of the best places to stay in Zadar full stop. It sits right in the heart of the old town, inside a beautifully restored 18th-century palace, with rooms that balance history and contemporary design really well. The location means you can walk to everything, including the Sea Organ, in under ten minutes.
Miramare Hotel is positioned right on the seafront, with views over the Adriatic that make waking up here feel quite unreasonably good. It is a bit further from the old town center, but the waterfront location more than compensates.
Hotel Kali sits on the island of Ugljan, just a short ferry ride from Zadar. It is not technically in the city, but for anyone who wants a quieter base with easy access, this is a truly special option: a small harbor village, fresh seafood, and the kind of pace that actually allows you to decompress.
For a night near Krka National Park, Kalpic Suites & Villa is a great pick. Almost everything on the table is homemade: the wine, the cheese, the bread, the prosciutto. The olive oil alone is worth making the detour. Stay the night to be at the park gate early the next morning.

things to do in Zadar: Getting to and around
Zadar has its own international airport with direct connections from several European cities, particularly in summer. Renting a car is the best way to explore the region properly: Krka, Plitvice, Šibenik, and the Kornati Islands all become much more accessible with your own transport. Compare rental options via Discover Cars to find the best deal for your dates.
For getting around Zadar itself at night, taxis and rideshares are cheap and readily available. Leave the car at the hotel and order an extra glass of Croatian wine at dinner. You can also stay connected throughout Croatia without expensive roaming charges by picking up an eSIM from Saily before you leave.
