Solid Surf House Sri Lanka: home away from home

In Sri Lanka, I always spend at least a week at a surf camp. It is the best way to get used to the local conditions, upgrade your technique and meet people who are equally obsessed with chasing waves. Sri Lanka’s surf camps cater to all levels and after 5 trips I have tried a fair few. Solid Surf House Sri Lanka remains the one I recommend most, sitting perfectly between Weligama and Ahangama on the south coast. During my week here I shared a surf session with a Danish surf champion, which was either very inspiring or very humbling depending on how you look at it.

Solid Surf House Sri Lanka: the rooms

During my stay I slept in the Deluxe Room, which is equipped with everything you could need. Clean, modern and spacious, with a decor that looks straight out of a well-curated Pinterest board. There is a mini-fridge in the room, which sounds like a small thing until you want a cold drink at midnight. The bathroom has an enormous rain shower with a tropical plant, which is either a design choice or has simply taken over at this point. Either way, it works. There is a safe and a laundry service that returns everything fresh within a day, which after a month of travelling felt like a small miracle.

Solid Surf House Sri Lanka: surfing at all levels

Before arrival you specify your surfing level, and based on that you are placed in a surf group. For my first 2 days I had the group entirely to myself and enjoyed private lessons, which felt like an unreasonable stroke of luck. Beginners and intermediates typically head to Weligama bay, which has a beach break with soft sand rather than a reef. Those sea urchins on the reef are not forgiving, as I discovered the hard way in Hiriketiya.

Weligama can get crowded, but the camp solves this easily: hop on a tuktuk with your board strapped to the roof and head to one of the other nearby spots that cater to intermediates and advanced surfers. There are 2 surf sessions per day available, so it is worth doing some arm prep before you arrive. You will thank yourself on day 3.

ALL MY HIRIKETIYA TIPS

Yoga, surf skate and activities in Weligama

The yoga shala at Solid Surf House Sri Lanka offers 2 sessions daily. Mornings bring Vinyasa or Hatha, afternoons slow down with Yin yoga. After a day of surfing this combination is exactly what your body needs and significantly reduces the chance of rolling out of bed the next morning making sounds no one should hear.

Beyond surf and yoga there are movie nights, surf skate sessions, video analysis of your surf sessions and a pool table that gets genuinely competitive by the end of the week. Follow me on Instagram for more Sri Lanka surf tips and behind-the-scenes moments from the road.

Solid Surf House Sri Lanka: food included

Breakfast and dinner are included 5 times a week. Each evening has a different theme: Mexican, Sri Lankan or a full BBQ night. The chefs go all out and the risk of rolling into bed feeling like a stuffed turkey is real. Breakfast often includes Sri Lankan options alongside the usual fruit, bread, eggs and muffins, plus a proper coffee machine for the caffeine-dependent among us. Lunch is typically a local rice and curry, though you will often find yourself eating near the beach or exploring nearby spots by tuktuk instead.

Explore the south coast in your own tuktuk

One of the best ways to explore Sri Lanka beyond the surf is renting your own tuktuk from TukTuk Rental. They connect travellers directly with local owners, so your money goes straight to a local family rather than a large company. You pick up the tuktuk, set your own route and stop wherever you feel like it. Go to tuktukrental.com to check availability.

MY WELIGAMA TIPS AND HIGHLIGHTS

Throughout the week the staff here feels like family. Saying goodbye after a week is genuinely hard, which is the best possible sign. I still think about those slow afternoons by the pool.

Staying connected in Sri Lanka is easy with a Saily eSIM: download it before you leave and stay online from the moment you land. No roaming fees, no SIM card stress.

Frequently asked questions

What is Solid Surf House Sri Lanka?

The camp offers surf lessons for all levels, 2 daily yoga sessions, a pool, included meals and comfortable rooms. It is one of the best surf camps on the island for anyone who wants a structured week of surfing combined with proper rest and good food.

Is Solid Surf House good for beginners?

Yes, Weligama bay is one of the best beginner surf spots in Sri Lanka. The beach break means soft sand rather than reef, which is considerably kinder on the knees. Solid Surf House groups surfers by level so beginners get appropriate instruction without being thrown in with experienced surfers.

After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without travel insurance. Whether you are surfing, hiking jungle trails or riding a scooter along the coast, things happen and being sick or injured alone in a foreign country without cover is something you really do not want to deal with. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible, affordable and easy to arrange even while you are already on the road.

What is included at Solid Surf House Sri Lanka?

Breakfast and dinner 5 times per week, 2 surf lessons per day, daily yoga sessions, surf skate and video analysis, pool access and accommodation. It is a proper all-in package.

Where is Solid Surf House located?

In Weligama on the Sri Lanka south coast, between Ahangama and the centre of Weligama. Ideally positioned for exploring the whole coast: Hiriketiya and Ahangama are both within easy tuktuk distance.

Planning to head east after your surf week? Read my guide to the best restaurants in Hiriketiya so you know exactly where to eat when you arrive.

What else can I do near Solid Surf House Sri Lanka?

Easy day trips to Ella for the Nine Arches Bridge and tea country, a Udawalawe safari for wild elephants and a Sri Lankan cooking class are all within reach. If you want more of the south coast, read my guide to Weligama for restaurants, hotels and things to do.

Never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden and, even at an “orphanage” or “shelter”, do your research in advance to check if the animals are treated well. At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, the animals are chained up underwater. Do not go there.
