Solid Surf House Sri Lanka: home away from home

In Sri Lanka, I always spend a week at a beautiful surf camp. Not only is it a great way to meet new faces, but it’s also the best way to get used to the conditions & waves and upgrade my, still not that “solid”, technique. Sri Lanka’s surf camps cater to all levels! Recently, I spent a week at Solid Surf House rubbing elbows with a Danish surf champ. Nestled perfectly between Weligama and Midigama, Solid Surf House Sri Lanka is the ultimate ‘home away from home’ on the south coast.

During my stay, I slumber in the utterly stunning Deluxe Room, equipped with all the comforts. Clean, modern, and spacious! The decor feels like it is straight out of my personal Pinterest board. Plus, there’s a mini-fridge in my room. So convenient! The bathroom with its enormous rain shower, including a tropical plant, is pure bliss. There’s a safe and two cute laundry bags, both of which I stuffed to the brim after a month of traveling. The laundry service here is reasonably priced, and after a day, everything comes back fresh and clean.

Before arrival, you specify your surfing level, and based on that, you’re placed in a specific surf group during your stay. For the first two days, I had the “group” all to myself and enjoyed private lessons! Beginners and intermediates typically head to Weligama. It’s my go-to spot because of its beach break, offering soft sand rather than having a close encounter with prickly sea urchins on a reef if you happen to take a nose dive. Those sneaky sea urchins—they’re fond of the reef and often go unnoticed.

Weligama can get seriously crowded. Luckily, there are plenty of other surf spots nearby catering to intermediates and advanced surfers. At Solid Surf House Sri Lanka, hop on a tuk-tuk with your board strapped to the roof, and you’re off to your favorite spot. So much fun! With the option for two surf lessons a day, it’s wise to give those arms a little pre-trip workout to dodge the dreaded first-day muscle soreness. You still want to be able to lift that coffee mug in the morning…

ALL MY HIRIKETIYA RECOMMENDATIONS

Solid Surf House Sri Lanka boasts a stunning yoga shala offering two daily sessions. Mornings are usually filled with invigorating yoga like Vinyasa or Hatha, while afternoons invite relaxation with soothing Yin yoga. It’s the perfect way to stretch out those muscles after a day of catching waves!

ALL MY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ELLA

Breakfast and dinner (5 times a week) are included in the price. Each evening features a different theme—Mexican, Sri Lankan, or an elaborate BBQ night. The chefs go all out, risking that you’ll roll into bed feeling like a stuffed turkey. So much deliciousness! Breakfast surprises often include unique Sri Lankan options alongside the usual suspects like fruit, bread, eggs, and muffins. Plus, they’ve got a top-notch coffee machine for the caffeine connoisseurs. Lunch at the camp is typically a tasty local rice & curry, but you’ll often find yourself lunching with new surf buddies near the beach or hopping in a tuk-tuk to explore nearby gems.

Throughout the week, there are plenty of other activities to dive into, like movie nights, surf skate sessions and video analysis. The pool table gets some serious action too. Saying goodbye after a week at the camp is tough. The staff here feels like family now, and I miss these cozy days at Solid Surf House Sri Lanka!

MY EXPERIENCE WITH DENGUE FEVER
MY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KANDY

Never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden and, even at an “orphanage” or “shelter”, do your research in advance to check if the animals are treated well. At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, the animals are chained up underwater. Do not go there!
