Where to Stay in Hiriketiya: Best Hotels for Every Budget

Hiriketiya is one of my favourite spots in Sri Lanka and I usually spend most of my time here and in Ahangama. Every European winter I travel to Sri Lanka and I’ve visited this beautiful island 5 times already. It feels like my second home. So when people ask me where to stay in Hiriketiya, I have opinions. Quite a few.

This is not a list of every guesthouse with a booking page. These are the places I stayed, the places I would send a friend to, and the 1 place I would never return to… In Hiriketiya the right hotel makes your trip, and so does the right area: the bay, Dickwella or the quiet road behind it. Choosing an area sounds a bit dramatic for a bay you can walk around before your morning coffee gets cold.

where to stay in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka

The best area to stay in Hiriketiya is the bay itself if you want surf, cafés and other travellers on your doorstep. Pick Dickwella and Pehembiya Beach for calmer water and sunsets, or a guesthouse up the road for quiet nights. Expect around 50 to 70 dollars for a comfortable double room in high season.

Best hotels in Hiriketiya for every budget

Hiriketiya is small, so nearly everything sits within a 10 minute walk of the bay. The choice runs from dorm beds and plain guesthouses set back from the water to a handful of design rooms right on the sand, with a double room around 50 to 70 dollars in high season. Book early between December and March, that is when the bay fills up.

My picks by travel style, in one line each:

Solo travellers: Dots Bay House, for the dorms, the events and the people.
Boutique: Cielo Hiriketiya, a 1 minute walk from the beach, with a stunning pool.
On the sand: La Playa Beach Club, 3 rooms right on the bay.
Budget: House on the Bend, ecellent location and big breakfast.
Quiet nights: Wilson’s Place, 600 metres from the bar noise.
A whole villa: Shaka House, between Hiriketiya and Dickwella.

Where to stay in Hiriketiya: the bay, Dickwella or the quiet side

Where to stay in Hiriketiya comes down to 3 areas: the bay itself, Dickwella and Pehembiya Beach just west of it, and the quiet roads behind the bay. Each one gives you a different trip. A booking platform will not tell you which.

Hiriketiya Beach: walk everywhere, sleep a little less

On the bay, the surf, the cafés and the other travellers are all on your doorstep. So is the music: the guesthouses on the main road behind the beach hear the bars in the evening. For solo travellers the split is simple: stay bay side for company, up the road for sleep. Pick the bay if you surf, want to walk everywhere and like meeting people over breakfast.

Dickwella and Pehembiya Beach: sunsets and calmer water

Dickwella, also spelled Dikwella, sits right next to Hiriketiya, and Pehembiya Beach is about a 15 minute walk over the hill from the bay. The water is calmer, so this is the side to swim, and it is the better side for sunset. Smoke and Bitters, the best cocktail bar in the area, is here too. Love this place! You trade surf on your doorstep for space, and prices tend to be a little lower. Pick Dickwella if you want to swim, read and watch the sun go down with a fresh coconut in hand.

The quiet side: up the road from the bay

Walk 5 to 10 minutes back from the beach and Hiriketiya changes completely. Guesthouses here have gardens instead of beach bars, and you wake up to birds instead of bass. I stayed almost 2 weeks at House on the Bend, a 6 minute walk from the bay. Although that did feel a little too long Pick the quiet side for longer stays, remote work or if you are a light sleeper. Away from the bay the roads are poorly lit, so a scooter or tuk-tuk helps after dinner.

Where to stay in Hiriketiya at a glance

Hiriketiya Beach: surf, cafés and company, with some music in the evening. Best for surfers, first-timers and solo travellers.
Dickwella and Pehembiya: calmer water, sunsets and more space. Best for swimmers and couples.
The quiet side: gardens, sleep and budget guesthouses. Best for long stays and remote work.

Best boutique hotels in Hiriketiya

The best boutique hotels in Hiriketiya are small: most of my favourites have fewer than 10 rooms, and the good ones go first in December and January. This bay is getting busier every year! These are my favourite Hiriketiya boutique hotels, grouped by how close you want to be to the water.

Hiriketiya Beach hotels on the bay

La Playa Beach Club: the beach club sister property, right on the bay. Stylish, social and brilliantly located. The restaurant has the best wine list in Hiriketiya. There are only 3 rooms, all above the club with sea facing balconies. One thing to keep in mind: the pool, the loungers and the restaurant are open to day visitors as well, so it is never just you and the other guests.

La Playa Studios Hiriketiya: beautifully designed studio apartments with a strong aesthetic and great value for the quality you get. The studios sit right on the beach, each with a sea view terrace and a proper kitchenette, so you can cook on the days you are done with rice and curry.

Cielo Hiriketiya: a small hotel about a 1 minute walk from the beach. The double rooms have air conditioning, breakfast is included and there is a pool for the days the lineup is too crowded.

Boutique places to stay in Hiriketiya near the bay

Salt House: a design-led retreat with yoga. Salt House works best for those who want comfort without the party energy. There are 8 rooms with open-air bathrooms and private terraces set around the garden, a pool, and a yoga shala with classes twice a day. Surfboards are free to use and the bay is a short walk away.

The Yard Hiriketiya: stunning rooms in a prime location and you can use the fully equipped kitchen which is so nice to have. Bathrooms are a bit dark though. I stayed here during my last visit. There are 6 en suite rooms around a courtyard, the shared kitchen has free tea, coffee and filtered water, and you can borrow yoga mats. It stands on the main road 2 minutes from the beach, but it still felt pretty quiet.

Best places to stay in Hiriketiya for solo travellers

The best places to stay in Hiriketiya for solo travellers are the social ones on the bay: a dorm or a small room, a shared table and something on every night. After 5 solo trips through Sri Lanka, I can tell you this bay makes travelling alone easy.

Social places to stay on Hiriketiya Bay

Dots Bay House: my home away from home during my first 2 Sri Lanka trips. Not ideal if you like peace and quiet though, but the food, atmosphere and location are unbeatable. It is a great spot for solo travellers because of the dorms and the events. They have some pretty impressive DJ, open mic and live music nights. Even when I don’t stay here, I like to hangout at Dots with a journal or my laptop and always meet other travellers.

Try the really good and intense yoga classes by Marleen in the yoga shala. Dots opened in December 2015 with one shipping container and 5 rooms, and now runs 9 rooms plus a 15 bed dorm, a swimming pool and free surfboard use for guests! Everything else is in my Dots Bay House review.

The Salty/ Salty Pelican: a surf and yoga retreat with a pool, set up for travellers who arrive alone and like a ready-made group. It now runs as The Salty Yoga and Surf Retreat, with room-only stays as well as surf and yoga packages. Read my The Salty review before you book. Reviews seem to be a bit mixed recently, but I had a great time here!

Surf camps: a different way to stay in Hiriketiya

Want lessons, meals and a group sorted before you land? Then a surf camp makes more sense than a hotel. If you prefer to go to a real surf camp, I would highly recommend Kima Surf Hiriketiya.

accommodation on a budget

Budget Hiriketiya accommodation sits mostly up the road from the bay, in family-run guesthouses with a garden and a big breakfast. You pay less and walk a few minutes more. Fair deal.

Budget places in Hiriketiya away from the bar noise

House on the Bend: spacious, basic rooms with everything you need. The breakfast here is so good it feels like home. Solid choice if you are travelling on a budget. I stayed here for almost 2 weeks, that felt a bit too long, but would highly recommend it for shorter stays. The walk to the bay takes about 6 minutes and the 9 rooms sit around a garden with a shared kitchen, a restaurant and free parking. Breakfast comes à la carte with Sri Lankan and continental options.

Wilson’s Place: a family-run guesthouse with a warm, personal feel and very friendly hosts. It sits about 600 metres back from the beach, which buys you a garden, a terrace and quiet nights instead of bar noise. Rooms have air conditioning, there is a 24 hour front desk and the family sorts out scooters and taxis for you.

Book here: Wilson’s Place

Not recommended: Barefoot Backpackers. Had a very bad experience here. Overpriced, not that clean, cold shower and a not particularly welcoming owner. The staff were very friendly, but the place felt entirely focused on extracting money rather than looking after guests.

Where to stay near Dickwella

If you want both beaches within walking distance, look at the villas between Hiriketiya Bay and Dickwella. A whole house with a pool and a kitchen makes sense for a group of friends or a long stay.

Shaka House: a 3 bedroom villa about 300 metres from Hiriketiya Beach and 400 metres from Dickwella Beach. It has its own pool, a fully equipped kitchen, a garden with a barbecue and air conditioning. Good for when you want to cook, spread out and still walk to the surf.

Staying on this side puts you close to Smoke and Bitters: the best cocktail bar and restaurant in the area, with a very extensive menu and a lot of delicious vegan options. It first made Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2022 and climbed to No. 14 in 2025. It’s my favourite restaurant! Book ahead and try to get a sunset slot, because the place is almost always fully booked.

Best restaurants in Hiriketiya

Wherever you sleep in Hiriketiya, good food is a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away. I have written up the full list in my guide to the best restaurants in Hiriketiya, but these are the places I end up at again and again.

MOND is one of my all time favourites and it is the place where I love to start my day with a matcha and my journal. For lunch, Lemon Grass Cafe does some of the best kottu in Sri Lanka. Roti Hut near hiri beach is a great pick for cheap, tasty roti and kottu. Raa is the best sunset spot in the bay, with delicious food and good cocktails. Try The Tree of Life; you will thank me later. Betaz is another great sunset spot that has quickly become a local favourite. Try the Gin Verde!

Best things to do

Most of what you do in Hiriketiya happens within walking distance of your hotel: surf, yoga, a massage, a long lunch. The rest are day trips inland.

Surf and yoga

The bay has 2 breaks: a beach break in the center, good for beginners and intermediates, and a left-hand reef point break for experienced surfers. Lessons usually cost around 6,000 to 8,000 LKR. Surfboard rentals are about 1,500 LKR per hour. Be aware of rocks and sea urchins in the water, especially on the left side of the beach. I got a little piece of sea urchin in my foot and that was not very pleasant. Lesson learned.

Hiriketiya has a strong yoga scene. Dots Bay House, Salt House and Arise all offer regular classes, as does Serene Villa slightly further out. Sunrise flows, restorative evening sessions, drop-in classes for 2000 rupees, it is all here. After a surf session, The Massage Shed is my absolute favourite massage spot in Hiriketiya. You are greeted with a cold towel and homemade iced tea.

Day trips from Hiriketiya: Ella and Udawalawe

Udawalawe National Park is about 1.5 hours north of Hiriketiya. Book a day trip to Ella and see the Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and Ravana Falls in one day. The 2-day trip to Ella gives you more time in the hill country, and my Ella guide covers what is actually worth your time up there. Moving on for good? The drop to Ella combined with an Udawalawe safari gets you elephants in the wild and a transfer into the mountains in one go.

How to get to Hiriketiya

Hiriketiya is about 180 km from Colombo and public transport does not service it directly, so you travel to Matara or Dickwella first. From Colombo, you can take a train from Colombo Fort station to Matara, which takes about 4 hours, and then transfer at the Matara bus station to a local bus heading to Dickwella for around 200 LKR, which takes about 1.5 hours. A tuk-tuk from Matara to Hiriketiya usually costs about 2000 LKR. I usually just book a direct transfer through my hotel.

For those travelling from Galle, take a bus along the main highway to Matara, then transfer at the bus station to another bus heading to Dickwella; count on 2 to 2.5 hours in total. A transfer through your hotel is much faster. The bus is quite an adventure though! Coming down from the hill country, I would build the train ride from Kandy to Ella into the route first.

Most travellers come down from Kandy via Ella, often with a safari stop in Udawalawe National Park, and reach the coast at Hiriketiya. From here the route continues west to Weligama for a few more days of surf.

Or even better, rent your own tuktuk from TukTuk Rental and drive the south coast at your own pace. Your money goes directly to a local family rather than a large company.

Practical tips for your stay in Hiriketiya

Staying connected in Sri Lanka is easy with a Saily eSIM: download it before you leave and stay online from the moment you land. No roaming fees, no SIM card stress. Handy, because the wifi in Hiriketiya does not always cooperate.

After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without travel insurance. Surfing, hiking jungle trails, riding a scooter along the coast: things happen, and being sick or injured alone in a foreign country without cover is something you really do not want to deal with. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible, affordable and easy to arrange even while you are already on the road.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Hiriketiya?

The bay itself is the best area to stay in Hiriketiya for surfers, first-timers and solo travellers, because everything is within walking distance. Light sleepers do better 5 to 10 minutes up the road, and swimmers do better near Dickwella and Pehembiya Beach.

Is it better to stay in Hiriketiya or Dickwella?

Stay in Hiriketiya for surf, cafés and a social scene; stay in Dickwella for calmer water, sunsets and more space. The 2 beaches are about a 15 minute walk apart, so you can easily have both.

Surfing sri lanka

How much does a hotel cost?

A double room in Hiriketiya costs around 50 to 70 dollars a night in high season. Dorm beds cost less, the design rooms on the sand cost more, and prices drop significantly from May to October. The best hotels on the bay fill up first between December and March.

When is the best time to visit Hiriketiya?

November to April is the dry season on the south coast and the best time to visit Hiriketiya Sri Lanka for surf and sunshine. December and January are the busiest and most expensive months, so if you want the good weather without the crowds, aim for March or April. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, humidity and rougher seas, and some restaurants and bars close.

Is Hiriketiya safe for solo female travellers?

Yes, Hiriketiya is an easy place to travel solo as a woman: the bay is small, almost everything is within walking distance and there are always other travellers around. I have always felt safe here. Away from the bay the roads are poorly lit, so take a tuk-tuk after dark. When you book a full body massage, always ask for a masseur of the same sex.
