Top Hotels in Ella 2026: Where to Stay for Every Budget
Sri Lanka is my second home and I’ve been to this beautiful island 5 times already! Ella is one of my favourite places in Sri Lanka, and there are so many good places to stay! I spent 5 nights here again recently and loved the mountain views, the little cafés and the fact that I could easily spend an entire day doing absolutely nothing. I also explored quite a bit, of course. You can read all about that in my guide to things to do in Ella. But first, let’s have a look at my top hotels in Ella!
When choosing a hotel in Ella, location really matters. The town itself is small, but many hotels are tucked away in the surrounding hills. A hotel just 2 km from the centre might look close on Google Maps, but walking back uphill after dinner is another story. I’ve selected my favourite places to stay for different budgets, including the best areas and a few tips for solo travellers.

Top hotels in Ella: which area suits you
Where you stay in Ella makes quite a difference. Ella itself is compact, but the hotels and guesthouses are spread across the surrounding hills. I’d narrow it down to 3 areas, depending on what you’re looking for.
Ella town is the most convenient option, with cafés, restaurants and the train station within walking distance. I’d recommend staying here if you’re travelling solo or don’t want to rely on tuk-tuks. Passara Road, towards Little Adam’s Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, is quieter and has some beautiful mountain views. Kithal Ella is a little further out, with guesthouses overlooking the valley and trains passing through the hills.
Prices vary quite a bit. You can find family-run guesthouses for around €25 to €45 a night outside peak season, while villas with a view can cost around €100. For a stay on a tea estate, expect to pay €220 or more. Many accommodations outside the centre offer station pick-ups, so you won’t have to drag your suitcase uphill.

Best hotels in Ella town and around the station
Staying in or near Ella town is convenient, especially if you don’t want to rely on tuk-tuks. You’ll have plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby, and the train station and the trail to Nine Arch Bridge are within walking distance.
Hive Ella Hostel has a prime location on the Wellawaya Road, about 700 metres from Ella station and right next to the main bus stop. There is a female dorm next to the mixed ones, plus rooms of your own when you want a door that closes. A delicious Sri Lankan breakfast is included, and free wifi, tea and coffee come with the bed. The programme sorts itself out: family dinners, movie nights and group hikes up Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. Guests share a WhatsApp group, so finding a hiking buddy takes 1 message. Evenings end around the outdoor fireplace. There are a lot of stairs; consider them training for Ella Rock. The 2 dogs and a cat seal the deal.
Green Forest Cabanas is an 11-minute walk from Ella station, or 5 minutes by tuktuk. Wooden cabanas with a private bathroom, terraces that face straight into the lush greenery and, from some rooms, the mountains behind them. An ideal hotel if you want the jungle and dinner within walking distance. Keep an eye on your breakfast; the monkeys are opportunists.
Top hotels in Ella on the edge of town
Rawana River Edge is the one to book if you would rather fall asleep to running water than to tuktuk engines. Every room has a balcony or terrace with garden views or mountain views. Breakfast comes American, Asian or à la carte, and there is a sun terrace for slow mornings. The centre is less than 1 km away, and the shuttle saves your legs for the hikes.
Sathkara Resort Ella is on my list for a next trip. It sits on Rathnagiri Estate, about 2 km from the station. Think outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and balconies facing the mountains: a pool day in tranquil surroundings, without tea estate prices.
Hotels on the Passara Road, near Little Adam’s Peak
The Passara Road is where the views in Ella get greedy, and where several of the best Ella hotels sit. The road winds past the Nine Arch Bridge turn and the Little Adam’s Peak trail. Its hotels cling to the slopes, with scenic mountain views from almost every terrace. Hike in the morning, swim with a view in the afternoon: outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers will feel at home.
98 Acres Resort & Spa is the splurge on this list, and the one I would pick for a birthday. The chalets look out over the tea plantations of a working estate. They are built from upcycled materials, with decks made from old railway sleepers. The perfect hotel to unwind. Its infinity pool points straight at Little Adam’s Peak. The trailhead is roughly 15 minutes away on foot. I came for lunch after the hike: 12 small curry dishes with rice, the best curries I ate in Sri Lanka. Rooms start around €220 a night. The spa is a sensible way to spend an afternoon once your legs have given up.
Valley views on a mid-range budget
Chill Ville View Point Hotel gives you the kind of outlook another Ella hotel would charge double for. Spacious rooms in wood and concrete come with private balconies over the Sri Lankan hill country. The pool sits right among the treetops. Easy access to the Nine Arch Bridge, about 800 metres away, puts you on the tracks before the tour vans arrive. If your budget sits somewhere between backpacker and splurge, start here.
The Ledge Ella has 3 rooms and panoramic windows facing Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. Exactly as good as it sounds. It sits further out at the 7th Mile Post, far from main street noise. The access track is rough, so the property runs a tuktuk to and from the main road at no extra cost. The on-site restaurant packs you a lunch before a hike, and they arrange bike tours too.

Kithal Ella: top hotels in Ella with the train below
Kithal Ella is the sleepy valley one stop past Ella on the railway. Stay here if the train is half the reason you came and stunning landscapes the other half. Some of the best places to stay in Ella hide down this valley.
Ella Trail Luxury Villa sits above Kithal Ella, with floor-to-ceiling glass and concrete framing the valley from almost every room. The railway line passes directly below the property, so the blue train crosses your view several times a day. There are only 5 rooms and a coffee shop on site. Add a reading nook with a bookshelf and a telescope on one of the balconies. Bookworms and train spotters, this one is yours. A footpath drops down to the tracks, which you can follow all the way into Ella town. The Kital Ella waterfall is about 10 minutes away on foot. The final lanes are too narrow for a car, so a tuktuk picks you up on the road above. Reckon on around €100 a night.
Family guesthouses above the railway
Guest Inn Avendra is a family run guest house on Station Road in Kithal Ella. The centre is around 25 minutes on foot along the train tracks. Breakfast is served on the terrace with the valley in front of you. It turns up in almost every review for a reason. Imantha and his family collect guests from Ella station and arrange onward transport. That turns the steep access road into a non-issue. Sri Lankan hospitality, the way you hope it will be, and the quickest way into local culture. They also run cooking classes, so you can take the breakfast recipes home.
Fern Hill Cabins is a family run hideaway in a tranquil setting above the railway, about 3 km from Ella station. The cabins are built around one enormous window looking over the valley and the train line. Upstairs there is a projector and beanbags for rainy afternoons, plus a hammock with a view that makes leaving difficult. Breakfast is home cooked and different every morning. They collect guests from the station and sort tuktuks and scooters without being asked twice. There is free parking too, handy if you rent your own tuktuk.

Solo in Ella: how I pick my base
For solo travellers, the best place to stay in Ella is within walking distance of the main street. Or somewhere that picks you up. Ella is an easy place to travel alone. One main street, a few side roads, and by evening everyone ends up in the same spots.
Chill Café is where that happens. The beanbags upstairs fill with travellers every night. I reunited with people I met there for the rest of my Sri Lanka trip. A hostel with family dinners, like Hive Ella Hostel, gives you the same thing without leaving the building.
The Passara Road and Kithal Ella hold some of the top hotels in Ella. They are beautiful and calm, and after dark they feel properly remote. A long climb home on your own is not how you want to end a slow dinner. Pick a place with pickup, or book the tuktuk back before dessert. Ella Rock is the one hike I would not do alone; I was followed by an aggressive pack of dogs on the trail. My solo travel Sri Lanka guide has the rest of what I learned travelling the island alone.
Getting to Ella and between the hotels
Most travellers arrive in Ella by train, and right now that train starts at Nanu Oya. Flying in? Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is closest at about 85 km, though most flights land in Colombo. Since Cyclone Ditwah hit in late 2025, the stretch between Kandy and Nanu Oya has been closed. The classic ride from Kandy now starts with a road transfer. Nanu Oya was always the smart place to board for the prettiest stretch of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Check the latest status with Sri Lanka Railways before you go. Read my Kandy to Ella train guide for tickets and where to sit. Trains run on Sri Lankan time; mine was 2 hours late.
Once you are in Ella, tuktuks do the rest. They wait outside Ella railway station and on the main street, and most guesthouses outside town will call one for you. For day trips to nearby attractions at your own pace, you can rent your own tuktuk from a local owner. I set up my Saily eSIM before I land, which makes calling a pickup from a hillside a lot less stressful.
After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without insurance. Hiking slippery trails and riding tuktuks up mountain roads is exactly when you want cover. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible and simple to arrange while you are already on the road. Also, pack a warm layer: Ella gets surprisingly cold in the evenings, even if you arrived from the coast sweating through your shirt.

Best things to do in Ella
The best things to do in Ella start right outside the top hotels in Ella. The major attractions are Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock, the Nine Arch Bridge and Lipton’s Seat. Adventure seekers can add waterfalls and a zipline over half a kilometre long. All of them are best before the clouds roll in, so set an early alarm.
Little Adam’s Peak is a gentle 30-minute hike with views over the tea plantations. It pairs well with lunch at 98 Acres afterwards. The guided Little Adam’s Peak, Nine Arches and Waterfalls tour combines 3 sights in one morning.
Day trips from the top hotels in Ella
On a clear morning, the tea fields below Lipton’s Seat stretch as far as you can see. On a cloudy morning, you are essentially standing in the sky. The tuktuk safari takes you up through the tea estates, past the old Dambatenne tea factory.
A cooking class is the answer to a rainy afternoon, and a hands-on way into the local cuisine. Especially after a week of the same dal curry.
The hiking routes, waterfalls and my favourite cafés are all in my Ella highlights and tips.
Heading to the coast after Ella? My favourite beds are in my guides on where to stay in Hiriketiya and the best hotels in Ahangama. If you surf, I stayed at Solid Surf House in Weligama and at Salty Pelican in Hiriketiya. For the rest of the coast: my Hiriketiya guide, the best restaurants in Hiriketiya, my Ahangama tips and the Weligama guide. Things to do in Galle covers the old town, and there is more in my Hiriketiya archive.
Top hotels in Ella: Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Ella?
Ella town, near the station, is the best area for most travellers. You can walk to restaurants, cafés and the train. Pick the Passara Road for scenic views close to Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. Kithal Ella suits a quiet guesthouse stay with the train passing below.
What are the top hotels in Ella for solo travellers?
Hive Ella Hostel is my top pick for solo travellers. It is about 700 metres from the station, with a female dorm, family dinners and group hikes. Want a room of your own with a family looking out for you? Guest Inn Avendra and Fern Hill Cabins both collect you from Ella station.
How many nights do you need in Ella?
4 to 5 nights is the sweet spot. That gives you time for outdoor adventures like Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock and the Nine Arch Bridge. Add a day trip to Lipton’s Seat or Ravana Falls. I stayed 5 nights and used one of them to do absolutely nothing, which I also recommend.
How much does a hotel in Ella cost?
Budget hotels and family guesthouses in Ella cost around €25 to €45 a night outside peak season. Expect around €100 for a villa with a view. A chalet on a tea estate runs €220 or more. Prices have climbed as Ella got busier. At the top hotels in Ella they peak from January to April, so book your stay well ahead for those months.
When is the best time to visit Ella Sri Lanka?
January to April is the best time to visit Ella. It is the driest period and the most reliable for open views from the summits. Waterfalls are at their most impressive in the rainy season, even if the trails get muddier. Mornings are nearly always clearer than afternoons, and on a clear one you can look straight through Ella Gap to the plains.
