Hiriketiya Sri Lanka: Travel Guide, Tips and Hotels
Hiriketiya is one of my favourite spots in Sri Lanka and I usually spend most of my time here. Although it is getting busier, it is still a beautiful place with some excellent accommodation options, great food and one of the most photogenic horseshoe bays on the south coast. Almost everything is within walking distance. These are my Hiriketiya Sri Lanka tips, updated with all my latest discoveries.

Introduction to Hiriketiya Sri Lanka
Hiriketiya Sri Lanka sits on the south coast of the island, about 15 kilometres east of Dikwella and a world away from the resort towns further up the coast. What makes it special is the shape of the bay: a near-perfect horseshoe, sheltered enough for beginners to learn to surf and beautiful enough that you forget entirely what day it is. The beach is compact, the jungle comes right up to the edges and at low tide the whole bay turns golden.
The town itself is essentially one long strip of cafés, guesthouses, surf schools and yoga studios, which sounds small until you realise that strip contains some of the best food and most interesting people you will meet in Sri Lanka. It attracts a good mix of surfers, solo travellers, digital nomads and couples who want beauty without the crowds. Getting here takes a little effort, which is precisely why it still feels like a discovery.
Hiriketiya is best reached from Colombo by coastal train to Weligama or Matara, followed by a short tuk-tuk ride to the bay. Or even better, rent your own tuk-tuk from TukTuk Rental and drive the south coast at your own pace. Your money goes directly to a local family rather than a large company.
Most travellers arrive in Hiriketiya via Kandy and the south coast, often stopping in Weligama for a few days of surf before continuing east to the bay.

Boutique hotels and guesthouses in Hiriketiya
Dots Bay House: my ultimate home away from home during my Sri Lanka trip. Not ideal if you like peace and quiet, but the food, atmosphere and location are unbeatable.
Salt House: a beautiful, design-led retreat with yoga. One of the best spots in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka for those who want comfort without the party energy.
Wilson’s Place: a wonderful guesthouse with a warm, personal feel and one of the friendliest hosts in Hiriketiya.
House on the Bend: spacious rooms with everything you need. The breakfast here is so good it feels like home.
The Yard Hiriketiya: stunning rooms in a prime location and you can use the fully equipped kitchen. Bathrooms are a bit dark though.
I stayed at the lovely Dots Bay House twice. This was my ultimate home away from home the first 2 times I was in Sri Lanka and I love the food here. In the evenings there are often live performances, so it is not the quietest place. Every year it is getting busier and busier and there are some pretty impressive DJ nights.

Beach stays and studio apartments in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka
La Playa Studios Hiriketiya: beautifully designed studio apartments with a strong aesthetic and excellent value for the quality you get.
La Playa Beach Club: the beach club sister property, right on the bay. Stylish, social and brilliantly located.
Also worth considering: more options on Booking.com for all budgets and styles.
Not recommended: Barefoot Backpackers. Had a very bad experience here. Overpriced, not that clean, cold shower and a not particularly welcoming owner. The staff were very friendly, but the place felt entirely focused on extracting money rather than looking after guests.

Best things to do in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka
Surfing
Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is one of the south coast’s best surf spots. The bay is sheltered and manageable for beginners, while the reef break on the left offers more of a challenge for experienced surfers.
Yoga in Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya has a strong yoga scene. Dots Bay House, Salt House and Arise all offer regular classes, as does Serene Villa slightly further out. Whether you want a sunrise flow or a restorative evening session, you will find it here.
Massage at The Massage Shed
My absolute favourite massage spot in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka. You are greeted with a cold towel and homemade iced tea, and the massages are the best I have had anywhere on the south coast.
Shopping, spa and more
Visit the relaxing Tonic Spa! My Ayurveda back massage was so good. When you book a full body massage, always ask for a masseur of the same sex. Go shopping at L’Atelier (enter at your own risk), Le Ketiya and the shop next to Loco’s.

Day trips from Hiriketiya Sri Lanka: Ella and Udawalawe
Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is perfectly placed for day trips into the interior. It also makes a great base alongside Weligama and Ahangama for a longer south coast itinerary. Book a day trip to Ella from Hiriketiya, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa or Tangalle and see the Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and Ravana Falls in one day. For something longer, the 2-day trip to Ella gives you more time to explore the hill country properly. The drop to Ella combined with an Udawalawe safari is one of the best value experiences on the south coast: elephants in the wild followed by a scenic transfer into the mountains. I book all my Sri Lanka experiences through GetYourGuide.
THE BEST DAY TRIPS FROM HIRIKETIYA

I like to rent my board at the Lion Surf School almost every day. Be aware of rocks and sea urchins in the water, especially on the left side of the beach. The best thing to do is not to walk but just hop on your board. I got a little piece of sea urchin in my foot and that was not very pleasant. Nothing serious, but you are a bit crippled and because of the heat you can quickly get infections. Lesson learned.
Explore Sri Lanka in your own tuktuk
One of the best ways to explore Sri Lanka at your own pace is by renting a tuktuk from TukTuk Rental. They connect travellers directly with local owners, which means your money goes straight to a local family rather than a large company. You pick up the tuktuk, you set your own route and you stop wherever you feel like it. No schedule, no tour group, no waiting. It is one of the most fun and flexible ways to see the parts of Sri Lanka that most tourists completely miss. Go to tuktukrental.com to check availability and book your tuktuk.

Hiriketiya Sri Lanka: frequently asked questions
What is Hiriketiya known for?
Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is known for its sheltered horseshoe bay, which makes it one of the best surf spots for beginners on the south coast. It is also popular for yoga, healthy food, boutique guesthouses and a laid-back atmosphere that attracts digital nomads and slow travellers. Despite growing in popularity, it has kept much of its charm.
How do you get to Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?
The easiest way is by tuk-tuk or taxi from Dickwella, which is the nearest town with a train station. From Colombo, take the coastal train toward Matara and get off at Dickwella or Weligama, then arrange a tuk-tuk for the last stretch. Renting your own tuk-tuk from TukTuk Rental is a great option if you want to explore the coast at your own pace.
How many days do you need in Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?
At least three to five days. Two days is enough to get a feel for the bay, but give yourself longer if you want to take surf lessons, do a yoga retreat, visit Ella on a day trip and properly work through the restaurant list.
Is Hiriketiya good for beginners?
Yes, the sheltered bay is one of the best learning spots on the Sri Lanka south coast. There are many little surf schools that offers lessons for all levels and the waves are generally manageable for first-timers. If you prefer to go to a real surf camp, I would highly recommend Kima Surf Hiriketiya.
What is the best time to visit Hiriketiya Sri Lanka?
November to April is the dry season on the south coast and the best time for surfing and swimming. December and January are the busiest and most expensive months. May to October brings the southwest monsoon, which makes the sea rougher but also means fewer tourists and lower prices.

Never visit an elephant park where elephants are ridden and, even at an “orphanage” or “shelter”, do your research in advance to check if the animals are treated well. At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, the animals are chained up underwater. Do not go there.
