Every European winter since 2020 I’ve found myself back in Sri Lanka. Somehow I always end up in different corners of Ahangama. Over the years I’ve stayed everywhere from family run homestays and surf hostels to adults only boutique hotels, usually for weeks at a time. That also means I’ve made a few expensive booking mistakes, so hopefully you won’t have to.

Ahangama sits between Weligama and Koggala on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Over the past few years it has quietly grown into my favourite base in the area. This guide covers the best areas to stay in Ahangama, plus my favourite hotels for every budget, based on my own stays over multiple trips. Where to stay in Ahangama: the best areas

The best area to stay in Ahangama depends on how you want to spend your days. Do you want to paddle out before breakfast, walk to cafés in the evening or wake up surrounded by jungle? Ahangama stretches for about five kilometres along the Galle Road and each part has a completely different feel. These are the four areas I would choose between.

Kabalana

Kabalana is the surf side of Ahangama, 5 to 10 minutes by tuktuk from the village. The Rock breaks here, the beach is the widest around and the vibe is board shorts before breakfast. Stay here if your day starts with a surf check.

Ahangama town

If you like being able to walk everywhere, Ahangama town is the best place to stay. Most cafés, restaurants and small boutiques are clustered along this stretch of road, so you can head out for breakfast or dinner without arranging a tuktuk every time. My favourites include Ceylon Sliders and Hotel de Uncles. The only downside is that some hotels sit close to the Galle Road, so I’d always book a room towards the back of the property.

Sion and Midigama

Head east from Ahangama and the pace slows down. Sion and Midigama have quieter beaches, a more laid back atmosphere and some of the friendliest surf breaks on this stretch of coast. This is where I stay when I want to surf twice a day, spend less time in cafés and more time in the water.

Inland and Koggala Lake

If you’re after peace and quiet, I’d head inland towards Koggala Lake. Think jungle, rice paddies and monkeys in the trees instead of traffic. Some of the most beautiful boutique hotels around Ahangama are hidden here, just a short tuktuk ride from the beach. You trade walkability for complete tranquillity. Fair deal, if you ask me.

Where to stay in Ahangama: best boutique hotels

Ahangama has more boutique hotels than anywhere else I’ve stayed in Sri Lanka. Most have fewer than ten rooms and that’s exactly what makes this place so special. You won’t find many large resorts here, but small hotels where breakfast is cooked to order and the owner usually knows your name within a day. The downside? The best ones fill up months in advance between December and March.

Adults only boutique hotels in Ahangama

Casa Tikiri (adults only) Perhaps my favorite stay to unwind in all of Sri Lanka. So much atmosphere, beautiful rooms, Italian food and a lovely pool. If you want to pamper yourself for a few days, book a couple of nights here. I loved to relax by the pool and followed many yoga classes at the Paddy Lodge by Casa Tikiri, a little bit further up the road. Highly recommended!

Animals Boutique Hotel (adults only): An absolute gem. Great design, dreamy pool, romantic lights and great location. The best spot to recover from a little jetlag. I started my 5 weeks back in Sri Lanka here this year and immediately met friends that I spend the rest of the month catching up with. Great spot for solo travellers!

Soul Temple (adults only): a small beachfront hotel where everything revolves around surfing. You wake up almost on the sand and by the second morning you’ll probably recognise everyone over breakfast. If your ideal holiday consists of surfing, eating well and going to bed early, you’ll feel right at home here.

Casa Tikiri, Ahangama

Beachfront boutique hotels in Ahangama

The Find: one of the newer boutique hotels in Ahangama and already hard to book in high season. This is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve seen in a while and located right on the beach. It’s the new HOT hotel this year, so book ahead!

Lihinya Beach Villa Ahangama: a small beachfront villa with only a handful of rooms. Its biggest selling point is the location, step outside and you’re right on the beach, while cafés and surf spots are still within easy reach.

Blue Waves Surf House: If you’re looking for something more social than a boutique hotel, this is a great option. The café attracts both guests and surfers from around Ahangama, so it’s easy to meet people over breakfast or after a surf session. They also offer surf lessons if you’re just getting started.

Teddies: Rooms above one of my favourite sunset spots in Ahangama. You have surf breaks right in front of the hotel, ocean views from your room and some very good cocktails on the rooftop. Chances are you’ll end up here for sunset anyway, so why not stay the night?

PALM, Ahangama

Boutique hotels in the village and near the surf

Harding Boutique Hotel: lovely, luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Ahangama. Handy if you want to walk to dinner instead of arranging a ride every night. This is where you will get spoiled for life.

Mayava Villa: an oasis of tranquility in a prime location with only four rooms. I loved my stay here. The villa only has a couple of rooms with beautiful bathrooms. The pool is such a little piece of paradise. Breakfast is different every day and prepared with so much love and care. A true home away from home.

The Kip: bright, spacious rooms, fully equipped. The Kip is also on of my favorite brunch spots in Ahangama, known for its build-your-own brunch boards and a menu built around healthy eating, including vegan options. Try the matcha cinnamon roll and the delicious feta spread! There is a cute little shop downstairs too. Enter at your own risk.

The Merchant: a small boutique hotel with just four rooms, tucked away from the busiest part of Ahangama. If you like quiet mornings but still want cafés and the beach within easy reach, this is a lovely choice.

Sola Boutique Hotel: one of the few boutique hotels around Ahangama that’s surrounded by jungle instead of the beach. With just eight suites spread across a large tropical estate, it’s a good choice if you’re looking for peace and don’t mind being a short tuktuk ride from the coast.

Lighthouse Ahangama: A beachfront boutique hotel with direct access to the ocean and two surf breaks right out front. It’s a great option if you’d rather wake up by the sea than stay in the centre of Ahangama. There is a really nice rooftop restaurant with some of the best cocktails in Ahangama. Great sunset spot!

Dreamsea Surf Camp: the surf camp of Ahangama, right on Ahangama Beach. This beautiful hotel is located in the heart of Ahangama, so it can be a bit noisy here, but I still really enjoyed my stay here. The pool is beautiful, breakfast is delicious and it’s a great spot for solo travellers who would like to have great surf lessons.

Total quiet: where to stay in Ahangama inland

Palm Hotel: boutique hotel in the middle of the jungle, with photogenic cabanas, a gym and a very good restaurant. It is a little bit of a drive to get there from the main road, but very doable and the peace is worth everything in busy Ahangama. The gym is one of the best in the area!

Kurulu Bay: a truly luxurious retreat on the shores of Koggala Lake, featuring perhaps the most beautiful yoga shala in Sri Lanka and a great restaurant. Here, you’ll find complete tranquility among swaying palm trees and playful monkeys in the trees. Try the shrimp brioche for lunch! So good…

Blue Waves Jungle Villa: a quieter alternative to the beachfront lodge, tucked between the rice fields just a minute from Kabalana Beach. You still have access to the surf, but you’ll swap the buzz of the beach for a pool, rooftop yoga shala and much calmer surroundings.

Tekanda Lodge: One of the most secluded and fancy boutique hotels near Ahangama, set on a hilltop overlooking jungle, tea plantations and Koggala Lake. Perfect if you’re looking to completely switch off for a few days.

Samba Ahangama: stayed for a week in one of the private rooms. The room was a bit small, but I loved it. Great breakfast, the best coffee and an excellent location. They also have dorms, which makes it a great option if you’re travelling solo.

The Whitegates Lodge: small homestay with only 2 rooms. Delicious breakfast every morning. Includes air conditioning, a fridge and a really good bed. I stayed here for 10 days, so I am part of the family now. You can also rent a really good scooter here. The family is so nice!

Where to stay in Ahangama as a solo traveller

For solo travellers, I’d recommend Animals Boutique Hotel, Samba and Blue Waves. Animals attracts plenty of people travelling on their own, so it’s easy to start chatting by the pool or over breakfast. Samba has dorms and a relaxed café where people naturally end up talking to each other. Blue Waves Surf House has a similar social atmosphere, while Blue Waves Jungle Villa is a better fit if you’d like the same community feel but prefer somewhere a little quieter after a day in the water.

I’ve travelled solo through Sri Lanka on every visit, and Ahangama is still one of the easiest places in the country to do it. Between the surf schools, yoga classes and cafés, it’s surprisingly easy to meet people if you want to. And if you don’t, nobody looks twice when you’re having breakfast, reading a book or heading out for dinner on your own. Like anywhere else, I avoid quiet beaches after dark, but I’ve always felt comfortable travelling here on my own.

How to choose where to stay in Ahangama

Match your bed to your mornings. Surfing every day: Kabalana or Midigama. Cafés and bars on foot: the village. Silence and a book: inland. And if you cannot choose, split your stay; distances are so short that moving hotels costs you half an hour.

When to book your stay

December to March is high season on the south coast, and the boutique hotels with 4 to 6 rooms sell out first. For that window I book 3 to 4 months ahead. In the shoulder months, April and November, you can decide a week out and still have options. Between May and September the southwest monsoon takes over and most surfers move to Arugam Bay.

Getting to your hotel

From Colombo airport it is around 3 hours by road on the E01 highway. After a night flight I book a private airport transfer and sleep in the back seat. The coastal train from Colombo Fort stops at Ahangama Station and is the scenic route, just slower and with a change in Colombo.

Once you are here, everything runs on tuktuks. Rent your own via TukTuk Rental if you want to explore beyond your own beach; they rent tuktuks from locals, so your money goes to the local community. I also land with an eSIM already installed, because queuing for a SIM card at the airport at 3 in the morning is nobody’s ideal start of a trip.

After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without travel insurance. Surfing reef breaks, jungle hikes, scooters on the Galle Road: things happen, and being sick or injured alone in a foreign country without cover is something you really do not want to deal with. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible, affordable and easy to arrange even while you are already on the road.

Where not to stay in Ahangama?

Together Boutique Villa is the one hotel in Ahangama I wouldn’t book again. Breakfast was disappointing, there were several mistakes with my bill and I never really felt comfortable with the owners. The staff was really friendly and nice though. Most issues were explained by the fact that the hotel had only recently opened, but at these room rates I expected a much smoother experience. I spoke to several other guests who shared similar frustrations, although that isn’t reflected in the online reviews. Based on my stay, I’d choose one of the many other boutique hotels in Ahangama instead.

Where should solo female travellers stay in Ahangama?

Adults only boutique hotels like Animals attract lots of solo travelers, and small homestays like The Whitegates Lodge feel like staying with family. Both make meeting people effortless, which is half the battle when you travel alone.

Should you stay in Ahangama or Weligama?

Ahangama, if boutique hotels, brunch and reef breaks are your thing; Weligama, if you are learning to surf and want a bigger town with coworking and nightlife. They are 15 minutes apart, so many people stay in one and surf in the other. My comparison is in my Weligama guide.
