Best Luxury Hotels in Ella: Boutique & Unique Stays in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is one of my favourite countries in the world, and after 5 trips to this beautiful island, I’ve discovered just how special its smaller hotels can be. Ella is still a one-street town, but some of the best luxury hotels in Ella are hidden in the beautiful hills surrounding it. I spent 5 nights here and had one of the best curries of my trip at 98 Acres Resort & Spa. If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, my guide to the top hotels in Ella covers every price range.
For this guide, I’ve selected my favourite luxury and boutique hotels in Ella, from beautiful tea estates and infinity pools to intimate hideaways and unique places to stay in the surrounding hills. Some are worth splurging on, while others offer something special without the five-star price tag. Planning your activities too? The hikes, waterfalls and cafés are in my guide to the best things to do in Ella.

Best luxury hotels in Ella: what luxury looks like here
Some of the best luxury hotels in Ella are actually small boutique properties with just a handful of rooms. Others are beautiful resorts surrounded by tea plantations, with infinity pools overlooking the mountains. What I love about staying in Ella is that you can find some really special places, often with stunning views and plenty of privacy. Boutique hotels here often come with unique architectural designs, like beehive cabanas or a glass villa above the railway.
Prices start at around €100 a night for a small luxury villa, while a stay at a tea estate resort can easily cost €220 or more. Some properties offer all-inclusive packages, which can be convenient if you’re planning to spend most of your time at the hotel. Ella is a popular destination for couples seeking romantic escapes, but every hotel below works just as well on your own. Keep in mind that many of these hotels are located outside Ella town, so you’ll probably need the tuk-tuk shuttle to get around.

All-inclusive luxury hotels in Ella Sri Lanka
If you want someone else to think about dinner, these 2 are the answer. Both are all-inclusive, both sit on old tea land and both feel like someone’s country estate.
Uga Ghiri is the newest name on this list and the most polished. High on my bucket list! It opened in 2026 on the historic Sutherland Estate, with 15 standalone villas of about 1,200 sq ft spread over 11 acres of terraced hillside. Think spacious rooms, elegant Scandinavian lines and local Beeralu textiles. Every villa has its own hot tub on the deck. The restored colonial manor, Sutherland House, holds the library, a drawing room with a fireplace and the bar. The 15-metre infinity pool looks out over lush tea plantations towards the famous Nine Arch Bridge. An artisanal tea experience with a factory visit and tasting is part of the stay. Order a Sutherland Sour at the bar: arrack, lime and kithul syrup.
Nine Skies by Teardrop Hotels is a restored 1920s tea planter’s bungalow with only 5 bedrooms, most with four-poster beds and period furniture. It feels like staying with a friend who happens to own an estate and a butler: warm hospitality and refined luxury in one bungalow. Sundowners are served by that butler, the log fire is lit in the evening and the infinity pool faces the misty hills. Meals, snacks and drinks are included. It sits about 15 minutes’ drive from Ella and they collect you from Ella railway station. Free bikes are there if you want to earn your dinner. Ella offers few family rooms in this category; here 2 bedrooms connect, handy for families or friends.
View from Little Adams Peak
Best luxury hotels in Ella with a view
For the big views, stay on the slopes around Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Gap. These boutique hotels in Ella Sri Lanka put the valley right outside your window.
98 Acres Resort & Spa is where I ate the best curry of my trip, and the rooms live up to the kitchen. Thatch-roof chalets sit on a working tea estate that was renovated in 2024. They were built from upcycled and recyclable materials, and the spa uses herbal treatments made from plants grown on site. For the full splurge, book a Grand Executive Suite with a butler, a kitchenette and a private infinity plunge pool. Guests also get free access to Ravana Pool Club, a Balinese-style infinity pool with cocktails and a DJ. Mornings there are quiet; afternoons are a party. The Little Adam’s Peak trail starts close by, a short hike that is kid-friendly too. Rooms start around €220 a night.
EKHO Ella is the boutique hotel to book if you want luxury and the main street within a few minutes’ walk. It has just 12 stylish rooms with large windows and a shared lounge. The 2 Junior Suites have a jacuzzi of their own in a glass nook, and a heated outdoor jacuzzi looks straight over Ella Gap. There is no pool, but yoga every morning is included. Dinner is a short stroll into town, which makes this the easiest luxury base when you travel alone.
More of the best luxury hotels in Ella with infinity pools
The Pinnacle Ella Boutique Hotel and Spa sits high on the Kithal Ella side of town, set on green mountain slopes. There is a stunning infinity swimming pool, a spa and an on-site restaurant that looks out over the mountain tops. The adults-only rooms come with private balconies, private bathrooms, modern amenities and garden or mountain views. Guests have to be 18 or older, so the outdoor pool stays calm. The hotel can arrange hikes and bike tours, and there is a sun terrace in the garden.
Chill Ville View Point Hotel is my pick for affordable luxury, with lovely views over Ella. You swim with the treetops at eye level, the balconies face the Sri Lankan hill country and the Nine Arch Bridge is about 800 metres away. Guests enjoy free wifi of course and the hotel costs a fraction of a tea estate, which leaves budget for a spa day somewhere else.

Small boutique hotels in Ella
Small boutique hotels in Ella give you the view and the service without the resort price. These are the ones with a story.
Ella Trail Luxury Villa is luxury in miniature at a friendly price. There are 5 comfortable rooms above Kithal Ella, free wifi access, glass walls facing the valley and the blue train passing below several times a day. A coffee shop is on site, and a footpath leads down to the tracks and into town. Reckon on around €100 a night.
Unique places to stay in Ella, away from the main street
RAVARA Boutique Chalet Resort Ella sits on Temple Road in Rawana Ella, close to Ravana Falls and Ella Rock. It is adults only, with a sun deck, a coffee house and spa packages. Themed dinners and cooking classes run in the evenings, sometimes with live music. A good base for nature lovers who want the waterfall nearby, stunning landscapes and a programme without leaving the hotel. Love the bohemian vibe of this hotel!
Majentra Ella is the quiet one. It sits at the 7th Mile Post on the Passara Road, far enough out for proper silence at night and a tranquil setting for a relaxing stay. Wooden chalets with tea and coffee maker, a pool and wide mountain views over lush landscapes. Breathtaking scenery! Restaurants in town are about a 12-minute drive, so dinner at the hotel or a tuktuk into town is part of the deal.

Beyond Ella: luxury hill country stays near Haputale
Some of the most beautiful luxury hotels near Ella are actually located in the hills around Haputale. These 3 stunning properties are a little further away, but well worth considering if you’re looking for a peaceful stay surrounded by the natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country. I’d recommend spending at least 2 nights here to really enjoy the surroundings.
Thotalagala is a tea planter’s bungalow from the 1870s on the Haputale escarpment, close to Lipton’s Seat. Sir Thomas Lipton lived here from 1890 to 1910. The 7 suites are each named after a tea pioneer, with antique furniture and old photographs on the walls. The elegant rooms set the tone for a memorable stay: breakfast on the lawn, afternoon tea in the lush garden and a nightcap in the cigar room. Guests get exclusive access to the Dambatenne tea factory. Its eastern position often brings dry, clear days from June to August.
Waterfalls, plunge pools and beehive cabanas
Dream Cliff Mountain Resort in Beragala, past Haputale, sleeps you in beehive-shaped cabanas. The outdoor swimming pool looks over hilltops rising through the mist, with stunning scenery in every direction. A forest hike takes you to the Beragala Gap, with the lowlands far below. There is a zipline over the treetops, tea picking and secluded waterfalls close to Dream Cliff Mountain Resort to swim in.
The Capoe House by Mountain Boutiques opened in 2022 in Kalupahana, near Bambarakanda Falls, the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The deluxe rooms come with a plunge pool of their own, and the infinity pool faces scenic mountain views. Free private parking is handy if you drive yourself. Guests have to be 18 or older. 2 smaller waterfalls are a few minutes’ walk away, and the Wangedigala trail starts nearby.
Solo in a luxury hotel in Ella
Luxury and solo travel go together better than you think. All-inclusive hotels like Uga Ghiri and Nine Skies take away the question of where to eat alone. Adults-only stays like The Pinnacle and RAVARA are calm without being empty. Of all the best luxury hotels in Ella, these are the ones where a book and a sunbed feel like enough. Tip top boutique hotel!
EKHO is the easy option if you want to walk to dinner, thanks to its prime location above town. Expect Sri Lankan hospitality at every hotel on this list. Chill Café on the main street fills up with travellers every night. I met people there I kept running into for the rest of my trip.
For hotels outside town, book a pickup or a tuktuk back before dark. One tip from my own Ayurveda massages: as a woman, always ask for a female therapist. I had a great Ayurveda massage in Kandy. My solo travel Sri Lanka guide has the rest of what I learned travelling the island alone.
Getting to the best luxury hotels in Ella
Most travellers reach Ella by train, but since Cyclone Ditwah hit in late 2025, the line between Kandy and Nanu Oya has been closed. Take a road transfer to Nanu Oya and board there, or book a transfer straight to your hotel. Check the latest status with Sri Lanka Railways, and read my Kandy to Ella train guide for tickets and seats. Trains run on Sri Lankan time; mine was 2 hours late.
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is the closest airport, about 85 km away, but most international flights land in Colombo. Luxury hotels outside town usually arrange pickups from Ella train station. Most include free wifi, but it can drop in the hills. I set up my Saily eSIM before I land, so calling the hotel from the platform is easy. For day trips to nearby attractions at your own pace, you can rent your own tuktuk from a local owner.
After several solo trips through Sri Lanka, I never travel without insurance. I use SafetyWing because it is flexible and simple to arrange on the road. Pack a warm layer too: Ella evenings get surprisingly cold.

Best things to do in Ella
The best things to do in Ella start right outside the best luxury hotels in Ella. Ask at reception for a guide or a driver. Go early: the views are clearest before the clouds roll in.
Little Adam’s Peak is a gentle 30-minute hike through lush greenery, with views over the tea plantations. The guided tour adds the Nine Arches Bridge and a waterfall in one morning.
On a clear morning, the tea fields below Lipton’s Seat stretch as far as you can see. On a cloudy morning, you are essentially standing in the sky. The tuktuk safari takes you up through the tea estates.
Tea country day trips near Haputale
Staying near Haputale? Pick tea leaves yourself and taste the result on the Lipton Seat tea tasting and plucking experience. Or spend a full day in tea country on a tea adventure tour with village lunch.
A cooking class is the answer to a rainy afternoon, and a hands-on way into the local cuisine.
Heading south after Ella? A night near Udawalawe National Park means wild elephants, without the ethical concerns of the so-called orphanages.
The hikes, waterfalls and my favourite cafés are all in my Ella highlights and tips.
Heading to the coast and its stunning beaches after Ella? My favourite splurges are in the best boutique hotels in Ahangama, my Ahangama hotel guide and my guide on where to stay in Hiriketiya. I stayed at Salty Pelican in Hiriketiya and Solid Surf House in Weligama. For the rest of the coast: my Hiriketiya guide, the best restaurants in Hiriketiya, my Ahangama tips and the Weligama guide. Things to do in Galle covers the old town, there is more in my Hiriketiya archive, and all my Sri Lanka guides are in one place.
